Reports say Cronje's main force moves east or northeast freeing units at Modder River and Kimberley while Buller's forces push toward Tugela crossings near Pieters Station. Telegraphs describe a long rear-guard action toward Bloemfontein with British reinforcements and strong mobile Boer forces.
London reports General Cronje has escaped, while Lord Roberts’ plan showed precise timing. A delayed Dekiels Drift caused a one day setback allowing a hasty Boer retreat. A convoy escort held firm against a Boer attack with modest casualties.
London reports from Modder River on February 18 describe British surprise forcing Boer positions into confusion. Cronje’s wagon transport moved along kopjes toward Koffyfontein but halted by weariness and artillery fire. The Boer main body fought all day while mounted infantry harried their advance guards.
London telegram reports dawn Friday Boer movement toward Koffyfontein with wagons. British mounted infantry clashed near Klip Drift but withdrew. Knox’s Twelfth Brigade struck the Boer main body and heavy fighting lasted across a long front. The enemy finally escaped due to a serpentine bend in the river. our force is reinforced.
General Buller makes Hussar Hill headquarters as heavy artillery fire continues from Wednesday to Friday. British advance entrenches new positions while Boers reportedly retire their large guns across the Tugela Friday afternoon amid heavy rifle fire in a wooded region.
At Bayonet Point Birds River Feb 17 British and Boers exchange shells over Dordrecht with both sides holding key positions. General Brabant's Horse of 800 men pressed from Penhoek through difficult country, enduring eight hours of rifle fire. Casualties for the British include eight killed and eight wounded, among them Captain Crallan and Lieutenant Chandler. British also report prisoners taken and capture of forage and provisions.
In the Orange Free State near Jacobsdal on February 17, Boer rear-guard actions slow the convoy as Boers occupy kopjes to delay movement. Reports say the horses are exhausted and the Klipkraals Drift area shows the Boers disheartened while General French’s march gains admiration despite dust and storms. Shelling of Boers continues vigorously and open engagement is forced when kopjes are left.
Artillery duel unfolds at Hilangwane Hill as Boers shell British positions. By Friday dawn British infantry tense along a seven mile front to the kopjes near Monte Christo. An incessant shelling seeks to sever Monte Christo from Blaauwkrants Hill as slow progress continues up the nek to enfilade the Boer stronghold.

The Asiatic Prince arrived at quarantine from Santos with Captain Woodhouse dead from yellow fever on February 3. He was 52 and left a family in Liverpool. Chief Officer Campe took command to bring the ship to port. The vessel will be detained for disinfection and will discharge cargo into lighters in the upper bay.

In Frankfort Kentucky Lieutenant Colonel Morrow denies any mutiny talk among the soldiers guarding the State Capitol square. He says a conference was for official matters due to his mother’s illness and he remained after learning she was better. Major Nelson J Edwards to receive a $75 saber gift from the battalion and officers for his leadership. Al Hite of Newport injures knee on ice but not seriously hurt.
A St Louis Merchants' League Club resolution praises Governor W S Taylor of Kentucky for his steadfast defense of ballot purity and Republican principles. The club, representing over 5 000 citizens, sends heartfelt greetings and urges fast transmission of the resolution.
Governor Taylor attended Madison Street Presbyterian Church for the first time since stirring events began. He was joined by Colonel J. Will Wright of Bowling Green with no military escort, and was greeted with ovations and well wishes from congregants.
The National Board of Fire Underwriters offers 600 dollars for the arrest and conviction of the person who started the incendiary fire in Quincy December in the Terrell Block in Bellefontaine Ohio.

McCoy Bros of Liberty Indiana sue the Cleveland Cincinnati Chicago and Indianapolis belt line alleging discrimination in railcar allocation. Judge Baker granted a temporary restraining order. the suit follows earlier favorable ruling against the railroad in a related case. The McCoys claim repeated car shortages threaten their $10,000 mill and $2,500 sale value.
In Indianapolis at English's Opera House Miss Julia Arthur halted More Than Queen in act four after fellow actor Lawrence Hanley collapsed ill on stage. Hanley, who had recently joined the company, was to be replaced by an understudy as the curtain came down. John Major, Arthur's representative, said Hanley had just come from hospital and would not be dismissed. no intoxication was alleged.
Circuit Judge W L Brown heard arguments in a bank tax case in London Kentucky. County officials sue stockholders of First National Bank to tax ten years of stock shares with appeals planned regardless of outcome. The dispute could yield thousands in back taxes and affect all Kentucky banks. Judge Brown to issue an opinion this week.
In Vincennes Indiana February 18 Miss Ellen Yoder sixteen ran away from Plainville to meet her lover Charles Roach. The sweetheart met her at the train and they were greeted affectionately until the Chief of Police arrested her at her father Quincy Yoder’s request. Mr Yoder then came on the next train to take his daughter home.
Frank P. Stewart a Flora Ind school teacher was arrested on charges of assault and battery with intent to kill after allegedly striking Charles Girrard with a poker during a literary debate at Lockport He was released on a $2000 bond.
