Senator Borah presses Governor Cox on treaty wording as Congress weighs modified Lodge reservations. Republicans back bipartisan changes to advance ratification while Democrats signal few changes. Irreconcilables vow further opposition with expected amendments and procedural talks.
New York reports a fierce snowstorm and heavy seas hamper rescue efforts for the Old Dominion liner Princess Anne with 104 aboard off Rockaway Point. Coast guard and tugboats could not reach the vessel as Captain Seay reportedly breaks a kneecap and efforts shift to daylight.
Governor Cox in Dayton expressed great interest in Senator Borah's questions but said he would not comment after reading the AP version. He will reply after receiving the letter and would offer no statement at this time.
A bottle washed ashore at Ocean City Maryland carried a note saying five persons were lost off the Capes of Delaware in a small boat named for Anna Otho Thomas and dated February 4. The Maritime Exchange lists no craft by that name.
Toronto February 6. After telegrams to association members the Canadian Wholesale Grocers Association secretary reports over 100 replies in favor of stopping purchases from U S manufacturers unless payment is made in Canadian money. Some U S manufacturers say Canadian money payments will be accepted with prices equal to U S levels.
Thick low clouds and a heavy smoke haze enveloped Cincinnati and Chicago. The murkiness forced all-day artificial lighting and slowed traffic as visibility dropped to historic lows for the winter in both cities.
At the International Executive Board meeting Frank J. Hayes resigned due to ill health. Vice President John L. Lewis was advanced to President and Philip Murray, Pittsburgh District President, was chosen Vice President. Murray is seen as a conservative harmonizer with four years as district head.
Major General R. L. Howze testified before a Senate committee that Mexican conditions are intolerable and that Mexican control would lead to hopeless futures. He cited ten years of hostile acts toward the U S, murders, confiscations, and raids, warning that Americans face growing danger on the border.
In Columbus on February 6 the Republican State Central and Advisory Committees praised the legislature for constructive legislation, except taxation measures. They noted the city relief bill passed and vetoed by Gov Cox and said there were insufficient votes to override. A special session to pass income tax may be called, with Cox presenting tax relief. The Gardner bill and automobile tax law could provide relief if a session is avoided. No business was transacted beyond planning a statewide gathering on February 23 with Will Hays and Senator Harding as speakers.
Lansing Feb 6 Attorney General Groesbeck ruled there is no Michigan law barring a presidential primary candidate from having his name on ballots of more than one party. The amendment applies to the General primary not the Presidential primary. The opinion was sought by the Secretary of State amid reports Hoover backers planned petitions to place his name on both Democratic and Republican ballots.
The report notes President Wilson remains in seclusion at the White House with a cane and outdoor rides to cope with winter steps. Dr Grayson says he progresses weekly with encouraging convalescence and reads memoranda daily while officials keep to written matters awaiting a spring return.
Cincinnati representative A. E. B. Stephens suffered a right elbow injury fifteen years earlier after swinging an Indian club. He underwent an X-ray at the United States Naval Hospital in Washington, and doctors reported the muscle slipped from the bone and part of the bone was affected, offering no remedy.
A fire in Regla near Havana wiped out the American Agricultural and Chemical Company of New York and Cincinnati. Loss estimated at over 10 million dollars. The blaze, likely starting on the nitrate laden Brookland, caused explosions and injuries to several firemen. Firefighters from Havana helped fight the blaze, while onlookers cheered when a crew member saved the ship's flag.
The American Federation of Labor outlines a bipartisan, nation wide effort to elect friendly officials and oppose unfriendly lawmakers in Congress and state offices. Labor aims to mobilize 4 million members plus farmers, focusing on primaries, with organizers and coordinated district canvassing.
Henry E. De Kay of Ashburn, Virginia, uncle of Jeanne De Kay who vanished from Hull House, Chicago, was sentenced in Federal Court to five years in state prison for participating in the wrecking of the Atlantic National Bank of Providence in 1914. He posted $15,000 bail pending appeal. previously found guilty of misapplying bank funds. An appeal likely to be heard next spring by the Boston Circuit Court of Appeals.
In New York the stock market endured one of its wildest closing hours in months as heavy declines earlier gave way to a rally after a drop in call money. United States Steel rose above 97% while many leading issues fell 6 to 15 points before late buys.
In Washington on February 6 Representatives Mann of Illinois and Bee of Texas criticized the Weather Bureau. Mann cited frequent forecast errors last summer, while Bee linked deaths from a Gulf storm to insufficient warning, accusing the bureau of unreliable predictions.
In Atlanta on February 6 officials report two eight month old girls blue eyed Mary Elizabeth and brown eyed Louise Madeline became the subject of a custody dispute between mothers Mrs. John C. Garner and Mrs. Daniel L. Pittman. Mary Elizabeth died of pneumonia and Louise Madeline suffered burns from an open grate with prognosis uncertain. Custody hearings were planned for the next day as Garner pressed habeas corpus in a bid to prove ownership and Pittman maintained the brown eyed child was hers.
The Virginia State Senate adopted a resolution by 24 to 10 rejecting the federal woman suffrage amendment after an all day stormy session. This marks the second defeat for the suffrage question in the state.
