South Bend Indiana reports a major crackdown on a thieves gang led by Albert Peverett and William Joyce based at the Peverett rooming house 422 South Michigan Street. Police found nitroglycerin explosives and firearms and secured a confession from Mrs Albert Peverett.
A Budapest dispatch to The Telegraph details mass killings by Serb forces in Albania and Kosovo including 3 000 dead near Kumanova Uskup 5 000 dead Arnauts at Pristina and dozens of massacres. Reports describe executions by machine gun and mass shooting along routes with hundreds of prisoners shot and burned churches and refugees dying from starvation and cold.
In Columbus Ohio prison authorities give J D Kramer alias Otis Hurley a chance to prove he climbed the wall during last Saturdays escape. If he fails guard H C Matthes is reinstated. if he succeeds, Matthes will remain dismissed.
A massive snowslide at the Coal Creek mines in Fernie British Columbia buried a carpenter shop where fifteen men worked. Four bodies have been recovered as rescuers work at the crushed site after rock mud and ice cascaded into the valley from a 500 foot drop.
Special Dispatch to Commercial Tribune Tyrone Pennsylvania December 30 A woman of this city walking in her sleep was struck by an east bound Pennsylvania railroad train. Miss Cullen lost both legs and was rushed to Altoona hospital in very serious condition. She said she had never before walked in her sleep and had no idea how she came to the railroad.
Ten year old Fitts Cole of 3¢ Orchard street is jailed in Summit New Jersey on a freight car burglary charge. He admits stealing ten pounds of candy, hiding it until Christmas Eve then giving most to a neighbor widow with five children to distribute to the children and sharing five pounds with poor friends. He remains held for grand jury action.
In Winchester Kentucky fifteen men linked to the Smitt Deaton and Callahan feuds face murder indictments after Sheriff Callahan’s death. Dempsey Lowell and other defendants stand trial as crowds and court staff fear further violence.
In New York on December 30 eight women began a unique experiment at the College of Physicians and Surgeons laboratories. They breathe into sixteen ounce bottles cooled in refrigerators, with food particles removed, to have the condensed vapor analyzed. The aim is to study sickroom ventilation and improve atmosphere conditions.
Boston dispatch reports Jesse Pomeroy, imprisoned for torturing two children to death at age 13, attempted to escape Charlestown prison by sawing three bars. A cat’s meow drew attention, a dummy hid his absence, and officials note prior escape attempts.
London reports that a peerage for the Right Hon. James Bryce, the retiring British ambassador to Washington, will be announced tomorrow New Year’s Day.
Washington December 30. Officials seized a nearly perfect counterfeit five dollar silver certificate likened to the Monroe head scare. Herman Moran detected slight variances, stamping it counterfeit, while W J Flynn warned the public as two specimens surfaced in New York City. Authorities investigate circulation scope.
In Gary Indiana a brick dealer sent 1000 bricks weighing 6000 pounds as samples to test parcels post. Postmaster and chief clerk struggled to move the load while others assisted. Officials anticipate brick shipments will grow under the new parcels post rules.
Ethel Hay, 20, a Cleveland salesgirl, admitted owing sixteen auto livery firms for taxi hires after three months of car orders. She lists total liabilities of 1162 dollars and assets of 71 dollars, asking exemption for the assets.
London dispatch reports Reginald McKenna refused to allow a condemned murderer to marry the woman who bore his child. John Williams, sentenced to death for murder of a police inspector at Flastbourne, sought marriage before his execution to legitimize the child. Miss Florence Seymour, the mother, gave birth to a girl yesterday and vows to wed Williams despite his hanging. Williams appeals his conviction with a Jan 11 hearing date.
In Bloomington Illinois Adlai Stevenson grandson of former Vice President Stevenson accidentally shot and killed Ruth Merwin aged 16 at the Stevenson home.
George Harris of Matewan, West Virginia, bet he could outdrink four men. He consumed forty seven Tom and Jerry's plus a pint of whiskey and six beers, then collapsed and died within moments at a saloon near the railroad station. Bert Stanlick organized the wager and paid for the drinks.
Sea Isle City New Jersey December 30 After a brutal gale and heavy seas the lifeboat crews saved ten of eleven crew members from the ocean tug Margaret as it was wrecked off Ford Inlet. James Duffin drowned during a lifeboat launch and the Tatham crew narrowly escaped when their power boat capsized. Duffin's body washed ashore while the Margaret and government boat were wrecked near Avalon as Captain Scott maneuvered to beach the drifting tow. The Avalon life saving crew later effected the rescue.
The Chicago jury split after five hours of deliberation in the Harriet M. Burnham murder case. Assistant State's Attorney John Fleming urged the death penalty and called her self defense claim a tissue of lies as Burnham wept during the closing.
In Indianapolis the sentencing of 38 labor union figures tied to the McNamara dynamite plots drew 10,000 people outside the jail. Thirty three were ordered to Leavenworth after mixed terms. several received suspended sentences including Edward Clark of Cincinnati. Frank M. Ryan led with seven years, while others received six, four, three, or two years.
