J H Halliday, second engineer aboard the Three Friends, testifies in Philadelphia that the ship conducted twenty-two Cuban voyages landing sixteen full cargoes and part of a seventeenth before a Spanish gunboat halted a chase. The vessel sailed from New York, carried a Krupp cannon, and landed men and cargo at the Marita River mouth near Key West and the Gulf.
Jacksonville reports that the steamer Three Friends failed to land its expedition in Cuba after being chased by a Spanish man of war. It landed its crew on a key near Key West and was seized at that port. The Dauntless planned to recover the men and munitions and attempt another landing in Cuba, with another expedition to follow.
In St Louis Dec 30 a man drew a revolver in a circuit court corridor firing at his wife her uncle and her attorney. Mrs Fischer was wounded in the shoulder and her uncle hit near the heart but survived. The assailant was seized and taken to the sheriff awaiting possible outcomes.
Indianapolis December meeting of the State Board of Commerce discussed municipal government issues. A report from the insurance committee urged repeal of the 40 percent penalty clause and passage of Finch's bill, while noting home company organization needs careful study and local referral. The panel also favored reducing excessive rates and improving their equalization.
Indianapolis December 30. A large business delegation will attend the Monetary Convention on January 12. Delegates from about forty cities have been appointed and reported to the Executive Committee. Cities listed include Louisville with General Simon Buckner A E Willson Logan C Murray Henry Seeren John Stites and Morris Ben nap. Lowell Mass Charles E Adams and H K White Utica N Y George L Bradford Philip Owen Otto A Meyer and Frederick Wolcott are also named.
Columbus December 3 The five member committee will not submit its canal inspection report before March 1 Two members favor retaining all canals while three favor abandoning the lower portion of the Ohio Canal The panel will split on the abandonment issue and produce two reports Governor Bushnell opposes total abandonment leaving the final decision to the Legislature.
John L. Wheelan, 71, died in Richmond today. Years earlier he lived in Cincinnati and belonged to the Westerns of the old volunteer Fire Department. He helped build the Cincinnati Courthouse.

Twelve hundred invitations went out and guests from across Illinois attended before the couple began a brief southern wedding trip en route to the January inauguration.
Governor William O Bradley plans to resign as Chief Executive of Kentucky with the resignation effective on or after December 15 1897. Health problems have forced him to consider retirement to avoid burdening the state with a lengthy vacancy or costly special election. If the governorship becomes vacant the lieutenant governor would assume duties and an election may be required under state law, though a vacancy might be filled without an immediate election.
In Dayton Ohio Albert J Frantz faces a first degree murder verdict with his collapse and recovery described The report notes Braced by attorneys Frantz regains composure and resumes eating and sleeping patterns while family members reel from the shock without threats of self harm.

Henry M. Weed an insurance broker leaped from a fifth floor window at his New York home today and was instantly killed his neck broken and body mangled. He had recently complained of financial losses.
Julius Katzenstein of Cincinnati secured a writ of attachment against Isaac Prager & Sons triggering their failure in Parkersburg West Virginia. The assignee Keller won’t discuss assets or liabilities. Katzenstein alleges the senior partner fled the state to defraud creditors and that Prager relatives aided schemes including shipping assets to Gallipolis. The firm started in 1853 and owned three outlets including a main store, a Racket shop, and an auction room.
Washington dispatch reports the Republican Caucus Committee approved a brief bill granting the President power to appoint delegates to an international bi metalism conference. Senator Wolcott relayed McKinley’s keen interest in pursuing the St Louis agreement aims and a spring conference to advance tariff and monetary reform.
In Indianapolis on December 30 a vacant lot at the corner of New Jersey and Eleventh streets caught fire. The blaze spread as the earth saturated with leaking natural gas ignited after a gas company employee struck a match to locate the leak.
William H. Post, 22, a mail wagon driver, was arrested on mail robbery charges. Investigators say stolen incoming mail from the West was recovered near West Brighton Beach on December 22 with keys to pouches found on Post. He denied the theft and claims the found items are gifts. Bail set at 5000 dollars.
Ex President Benjamin Harrison, acting as trustee for Vandalia Logansport Division bondholders, sues in Federal Court to enforce a claimed prior lien. He notes $45,000 in interest unpaid since last July on bonds issued during original and extended road construction.

In South Bend Indiana on December 30 5 year old Gertie Owens daughter of Alvin Owens of Niles dies after living five years with no sight speech or movement beyond head control. She survived on two quarts of milk daily and weighed about fourteen pounds at death.
Arailroad wreck on the Raleigh & Augusta Division of the Seaboard Air Line near Raleigh killed fireman Alexander Overby and seriously injured engineer John Robertson. Investigators say wreckers displaced a rail minutes before the crash to trap the Atlanta special. Bloodhounds are pursuing the offenders.
National Republican Committeeman Henry L. Wilson of Washington visited Chairman M. A. Hanna to discuss National Committee matters. General McCook returned to Cleveland from Canton and was closeted with Hanna for a short time today.

A four person New York family perished from asphyxiation today. John Lichtenberg a cabinet maker. his wife Lizzie. two children Willis 22 months and Jacob 12 weeks. Neighbors found the children dead and the parents unconscious. Doctors note gas evolved from unknown source as the probable cause.

Lexington clerical panel charged Rev. H C Morrison with preaching holiness against church rulings. Morrison was absent in California and the committee did not reveal its action though it is believed the effort was to discipline him.
Mrs Ella Higgins died alone in her Chelsea tenement a week earlier from Jamaica ginger poisoning. Her husband, a steward on a coal steamer in the gulf, left word. A collector found the body guarded by the starving but loyal dog.
Arguments began at 9 o clock in Barbourville Kentucky in the Adkins murder trial. Prosecutors Marcum and Kinley spoke for the state while Ben Golden defended. The jurors heard James address them that evening.

Salem dispatch reports detective John Sexton and jail turnkey John Brown from Louisville indicted for wilful murder in the killing of farm hand John Rippey. Mob fear spurred moving them to New Albany for safety as Governor Matthews counseled peace. Rippey’s remains were buried at Millcreek churchyard.
Violator Sam May allegedly enticed Washington Smith to a covert by the Ohio River near Vanceburg Kentucky. May struck Smith with a stone and, with brothers Hentz and Hiram, beat him to death. May was arrested while authorities pursue the two brothers.
In Hindman Knott County a drunken man named Ritchie burst into Alex Fugate’s shop and fired a revolver. The bullet fatally struck Fugate’s ten year old daughter who was playing nearby. Ritchie escaped as bloodhounds were released and citizens threaten lynching.
In Cynthiana Kentucky on December 30 special policeman Charley Lacy was buried with full honors. The funeral procession included the Cynthiana Military Band militia fire department and city fire corps.
George W. Curtis of Fayette County was to be arrested on a murder charge after a Christmas Day confrontation with a black man named Hayes Johnson. Curtis says the fatal blow was in self defense as Johnson died the following morning.
Marblehead Mass December 30 CHAS PEACHEY fell from a tree while gathering apples last October and broke his back. Doctors in Salem Hospital suspended him by the head and shoulders and encased his body in plaster. The fracture has knit and the lacerated spinal cord healed. Peachey is in a fair way to recover barring slight paralysis.
In Charleston West Virginia on December 30 William Porterfield and Walter Henderson fought over a $0.50 loan in a saloon. Porterfield struck Henderson with an iron poker, fatally wounding him. Porterfield fled and is believed to have headed toward Ohio.
In Findlay Ohio on December 30 Mrs Samuel A Lutz near an outdoor cellar ignited a torch prompting a sewer gas explosion. The blast wrecked the small building and roof. Mrs Lutz escaped but suffered severe burns and injuries to her eyes from the blast.
