Winter Haven Fla Dec 28 Harry Alvey his wife and three children were burned to death when a fire destroyed their home near here. Alvey was a retired Baltimore capitalist and son of former Chief Judge Richard H Alvey of the Maryland Court of Appeals. Mrs Alvey was born Bertha Keyser a noted Baltimore socialite. The Alveys moved to Florida about three years ago.
Governor elect Frank B. Willis of Ohio marks his 42nd birthday born December 28 1872 at Lewis Center Delaware County. President Wilson also celebrates his fifty eighth birthday with messages from foreign rulers and Cabinet greetings at the White House.
James Wood of the American Bible Society said every sailor transiting the Panama Canal will receive a Bible. Colonel George W Goethals has chosen a Bible distribution station at Bilboa on the Pacific side. A first shipment of 50 000 Bibles is planned.
Thomas Green, a local African American man, was shot and seriously wounded by Sam Jennings, another Black resident, who claimed Green had a hypnotic influence over his wife and two children. Jennings’ two children, Virgie 17 and Charlotte Greathouse 27, a married daughter, died recently, and police have not solved the case.
Leonard C. Humphrey a seventy year old Civil War veteran shot two bandits after they loitered in his store. One was killed and the other seriously wounded after he defended himself with a revolver when attacked with a hatchet and attempted strangulation. The surviving bandit was found at a physician's office.
