Washington December 27 formal work on the new tariff bill will begin Monday with twelve days of hearings before the Ways and Means Committee. Delegations must choose a spokesman to avoid repetition as representatives of labor commercial bodies manufacturers and importers testify. Statements both oral and written will be printed and government appraisers and expert witnesses may be called.
Robert Breckinridge, son of Col. Breckinridge, has returned to Lexington after a globe spanning odyssey begun in 1893. He roughing it across Calcutta, South Africa, Australia, the Pacific run to Acapulco, 250 miles of Mexico travel, sickness in San Antonio, and Gulf coast work before deciding he has had enough and returning home. He remains unwell.
In Columbus on the Scioto River an Italian immigrant named Michael Blue shot a boy in the leg and menaced others. Detective Frank Steube intervened, aiding Blue’s removal as a large crowd shouted threats and tried to mob the skaters. Robert Strasser wrestled Blue’s revolver away, and John Babbert Sr. swung at Blue before the detective ferried him to safety.

In Five Points the Five Point ers clash with P H Hensel and his son on the Hensel farm. Hensel is critically wounded after firing on the intruders who retreat to the road. Four Five Pointers are shot and escape. a hired man and F H Hensel's father aid the defense.
President elect McKinley spent the day at his Canton home receiving informal callers. He joined quarterly communion at First Methodist Episcopal Church with his Cleveland niece Miss Duncan, then enjoyed a brief drive and a visit with his mother.
Special Dispatches to Commercial Tribune Marion Ohio Dec 27 Mr Orley Shoots a farmer north of Marion fined 75 dollars for shooting a deer that strayed. Another man fined 25 dollars and costs for pursuing the deer with intent to kill. A third man who admitted firing at the deer as it was killed was found not guilty.
In Clarksburg West Virginia on December 27 a Baltimore and Ohio freight engine 1342 exploded while climbing Wolf Summit with a heavy westbound train. Fireman Dolan was scalded and injured, his arm broken by the blast. The train moved slowly, preventing a larger wreck and keeping damage minimal.
Wilmington December 27 news reports that Democrats petitioned Governor Watson to call the militia to Dover to avert trouble during the Senatorial election. The claim is considered plausible by observers despite no official confirmation.

Rev. Hunter Corbett, long time China missionary, told a Springfield audience that Russia holds a mortgage on large parts of Manchuria and could foreclose at any moment. He said Russia dominates northern China after driving China from Corea and letting Japan withdraw. The Corea king builds a palace beside the Russian embassy and effectively rules there.
Berlin December 27 Prof Emil Heinrich Du Bois-Reymond aged physician scientist and educator has died. He was a member and perpetual Secretary of the Royal Academy of Sciences at Berlin a professor of physiology at the University of Berlin and director of the institute. He was born in the Prussian capital and had long served in science and medicine.
A congressional letter argues Congress may bind presidential actions by law under Section 8, Clause 18, and that Congress can decide which foreign governments the United States recognizes. It contrasts President Johnson and Cleveland as instances of defying Congress, asserting the President is an agent of the people and Congress can control him.

She had left Downey years before for Hugh W Roberts whom she married and who later deserted her. She secured a divorce and reclaimed her maiden name. A large dinner followed the wedding at the settlement.
Police officer Charles T. Lacy died from a Christmas Eve wound given by Johnson Howe, a colored man. Lacy, member of the Fire Department and State Guards, was to be buried Tuesday afternoon. Howe was captured Christmas Day and moved to Paris for fear of mob violence, despite no demonstrations.

In Princeton Indiana the mine disaster leaves six dead eight injured and one man missing as rescue teams battle foul air. The bodies of Maule Ernest Reil Faber Holmes and Carl Poneylite are recovered or identified while others are rescued or remain unaccounted for. The wife and four children of the missing man Poneylight wait at the shaft as funerals are planned.
Liliuokalani, the Hawaiian ex queen, rode in Brookline on a first sleigh ride today. A glass front covered sleigh kept wind away while friends supplied extra wraps and a foot stove added warmth. She said she was perfectly comfortable and enjoyed every minute of the outing in Boston.
Arthur Sweeney was stabbed just below the heart early this morning by an unknown colored man in Lulu Shore's house at 41 Roanoke Street. He ran to a drug store on Indiana Avenue where his wound was dressed. Police found the house vacated and all traces of its occupants gone.
A wreck in Alabama left nine rescued and most victims miners. The list of dead includes James Bolling Guthrie Kentucky Frank White engineer A P Connell Helena George Carney Birmingham and several Blocton residents with several others named and one unidentified body believed to be Tom Struther. railroad officials corrected an earlier count of twenty seven dead or removed from the wreck by 3 p.m.
Henry Handberry a Louisville and Nashville conductor from Birmingham died. E E Eckels of Helena was slightly injured. Sam Spencer a fireman suffered a broken arm. Andrew Bryson of Blocton died. Miss Booth and Mrs Powers' child of Blocton were slightly hurt. Mrs Walker and her three children escaped with minor injuries. The relief train reached Birmingham at 9 tonight with ten dead and three injured. ten more deaths were reported at Blodden and one at Brookwood.
Birmingham officials report Fiends in human form wrecked Birmingham Mineral Train No 40 at the Cahaba River Bridge eleven miles from Birmingham. The crash after a rail was removed left the engine baggage car and two coaches plunging 110 feet into the river. Most victims were miners and residents returning home for the holidays. Conductor A P Cowell is among the dead with crews rushing to confirm the final passenger count in a local line of the Birmingham Mineral Railroad.
