Austin Horn of Findlay Ohio, a linotype operator, slept seven hours in a barber shop tub after a twenty four hour shift. The bath water froze and he was nearly frozen to death before discovery. He is believed to have a chance of recovery.
Gloucester reports the schooner Eliza H. Parkhurst with six crewmen and one passenger from N F to Gloucester went missing November 24 after leaving the Islands amid a gale. Eight men are believed lost. Captain John D. McKinnon commanded the vessel carrying herring.
The Order of Elks in Roanoke hosted a Christmas dinner serving eight hundred people and spent about two thousand dollars on Christmas charities.
Lexington, Ky December 25. The long scrutiny of J Henning Helms a prominent lawyer seeking priesthood at Wilmington Episcopal Church drew the state’s sharpest ecclesiastical attention in years. William H. Young of Springfield received a Christmas gift a $20 check, paid by J. C. Frase’s widow for a grocery debt from twenty years ago when Frase ran a Marion grocery. Young moved to Springfield afterward and forgot the bill.
In Akron on December 2 5 banker David P Wheeler cashier of Citizens National Bank was electrocuted while locking a vault. He held a bulb on a wire and gripped a heavy charged vault door as a crossed circuit caused instant death. His son Willard and widow survive him.
Nobel prizes awarded in Stockholm and Christiana with a ceremony led by the Crown Prince. Recipients include Wilhelm Roentgen in physics Jacobus van t Hoff in chemistry Emil von Behring in medicine Sully Prudhomme in literature and Frederick Passy with Henri Dunant in peace. Prudhomme ill prevented attendance.
In New York, a white and black clash in Harlem escalated as about 100 negroes armed with pistols and clubs battled an equal white group. Fifteen blacks were arrested and four whites, including a policeman, were badly hurt as rioters bombarded tenements and exchanged fire before police intervened.
Three men died near Wilmot after a land sale dispute. Martin Davis and Jeff Davis, cousins, fought a fatal duel. James Thompson, a friend, was later shot by Arthur Davis, father of Martin, who is jailed.
