In Calumet Michigan on Christmas Eve a false fire alarm caused a fatal stampede at a miners holiday celebration in Italian Hall. Seventy four corpses filled the stairway and hall with 37 girls 19 boys 13 women and 5 men among the dead. Authorities reported many injuries and a swift rescue effort as the crowd sought the sole exit.
Charles A Towne and Rae Spellmad offered Governor Glynn half a million dollars worth of notes from borrowers as a Christmas gift to win clemency for six months remaining of Auburn Penitentiary sentence. The governor delayed action, saying the plea must go through normal channels. The notes were carried in three bundles to Albany with Tolman family managers of branch offices in Buffalo Rochester Syracuse and Albany.
Special Dispatch reports from Juarez to the Commercial Tribune describe a spare Christmas in Northern Mexico. Rebels, with arms ready, will kneel in fields and celebrate with limited services as churches lack priests and bells fractured by cannon fire. The Chihuahua Cathedral and missions stand empty while local clergy conduct religious rites in Juarez.
New York December 24 Special Robert Stevenson a Williamsburg carpenter was found dead in his shop from apoplexy while finishing toys for his sons Christmas. He warned his wife not to disturb him as he worked on a pushmobile for Dennis age five and Thomas age four.
New York December 24 Dr Carlos F MacDonald testified for the State in Hans Schmidt murder trial saying the ex priest confessed feeling relief after the act of killing Anna Aumuller The defense alienists had claimed otherwise The court adjourned before he could recount the full examination Schmidt s attorney renewed attempts to reconcile him with his father and sister who say they will not see him until he acknowledges his father Schmidt refuses to do so
Miss Adelaide M. Branch, partner in the long alleged double life of Melville H. Couch who died last Sunday, is a voluntary prisoner in Monticello. Physicians say she is near collapse and a nurse is supervising her care. She ravings for Coach and asks to die so she may be with him when laid to rest. Her brother from Hartwick plans to take her home next Friday, hoping to move her at night after she views the grave.
Quincy Massachusetts December 24 Herbert Whittaker a nineteen year old confessed in court to setting seven buildings on fire over a two day period He is held for the grand jury His foster parents Mr and Mrs John L Lyons say he has had a mania for arson since he witnessed the death of his parents in a home fire in New Hampshire eight years ago.
In New York on the 24th a porter at 111 Broadway found a check for $60,000 lying in the hall on the building’s third floor. The check belonged to the stock exchange firm Posner and Co., listed among the building’s offices.
In Toledo on December 24 John Jopp lineman and EB User driver for the Home Telephone Company were shocked by a crossed high tension line after a telephone wire snagged in a tree. Jopp was electrocuted instantly and User was badly shocked and rendered unconscious in an alley between Prescott and Floyd streets.
W H Heap from Paterson New Jersey died after walking through deep snow to deliver Christmas gifts to Wilbur Harris eight year old son of a destitute Denver family Heap had traveled in bad weather to bring a sled train of cars clothes rubber boots and candy to the boy who was crippled Mrs Harris had warned there was no Santa Claus Heap rose from bed and personally chose gifts and delivered them by foot through the snow before collapsing en route to his car He died after doctors were summoned and he failed to recover
Henry Schneider of Columbus says police persecution caused his downfall after a ten year penal servitude sentence for robbery. He had stolen $40 at age 17, spent 44 months at Mansfield Reform School, and after parole faced renewed police harassment and false burglary accusations.
A German passenger, believed temporarily insane, threw his hat from a window ten miles east of Douglas and leaped after it. The freight crew rescued him and brought him to Douglas hospital. injuries are superficial. He boarded at El Paso and cannot provide his name.
Wilmington Del Dec 24 Hamilton R Woolford engineer was killed and J H Rawlins fireman probably fatally injured when the locomotive they were running sideswiped a freight train at Clayton Del early today.

In Chicago today Frank Klimek, a self-styled doctor under license dispute, shot at Charles Alling Jr former Alderman and state health official injuring his eye and then shot himself. assistant P H Schwaba was slightly wounded as Klimek faced prosecution for illegal practice. Alling and Schwaba were in the office with clients when the attack occurred.
Charles Alling born 1865 in Madison. educated in Madison schools and at Hanover College where he served as a trustee. He was attorney for the Illinois Board of Health and was shot in his Chicago office this afternoon.
A clash near Hendrickson's place four miles south of Pineville ends with two deputy sheriffs dead after Hendrickson and his armed group assaulting an unoccupied building where deputies sought shelter. Earlier Hendrickson shot Deputy Haynes and allegedly beat neighbor James Miller to death. A later fusillade reportedly left George Hawn among Hendrickson's men dead.
