A mob forms to lynch the suspected killer as authorities search the area. Herndon fled toward his home amid strong family connections and local tensions.
Isaac Smith of Pike County, condemned for murder since 1889, is pardoned after nine death warrants. Governor Campbell reprieved him eight times in a row, then commuted to life after the final near-execution. His lawyers and investigators argued strong innocence despite circumstantial evidence.
Columbus Ohio December 24 Warden Coffin received a telegram stating that the President pardoned Mrs Mary Thorp the Florida moonshining prisoner serving eighteen months She came to the penitentiary with a one year old baby Her husband died months earlier in the prison hospital Clemency was granted because the baby was in prison.
In Martin's Ferry Ohio a Wheeling and Lake Erie freight engine derailed near Warrenton tonight. Fireman Jesse Houghton was killed and Engineer Haines was badly bruised and burned. Both men were from Massillon.
Parkersburg Virginian December 24 reports burglars entered the office of Squire Kirk on the South Side last night. They broke a jar for a small amount of cash, threw it out the back door, and the jar rolled about twenty feet before tumbling into the river. Police pursue leads as fragmented details emerge.
A Lorain farmer named Mitchell attempted to cross the Nickel Plate Railroad as a freight train neared. His horse was killed, the sled it drew was demolished, and Mitchell sustained a broken leg.

Fireman Taylor stayed at his post and applied air brakes after the Louisville and Nashville passenger train jumped the track near Colesburg. Engineer Tom Gibson was badly hurt. the engine ran a distance on rails with rear wheels still on track before stopping. About 400 aboard including the Vanderbilt College Glee Club. The engine was replaced and the train reached Louisville at 2:50. Taylor may be promoted to engineer.
In Sistersville West Virginia at 1 am a stepfather Allen Whitman shot Delbert Haven, who woke for water. The bullet entered Haven’s left eye and exited at the brain base, causing instant death. Whitman, shaken, may be driven to mental distress.
Winchester Colorado Dec. The County Commissioners will be provided with 1 000 copies of the report by J K Brown the expert accountant sent by State Auditor Guilbert to audit county offices since 1830 The Brown report shows overcharges and illegal printing totaling over 17 000 dollars and will be distributed to taxpayers free of charge.
Republican leaders in Kentucky have made indirect propositions to National Democrats to fuse in the race for Clerk of the Court of Appeals. The discussion centers on aligning against the Gold faction within the Democrats.
A strike action was declared ended at midnight affecting operations at Di Orme and Hilal. Officials cited resolution of dispute and return to normal service with minimal disruption reported across affected sites.

Camden Ohio December 24 Hull Bennett was cut in the abdomen at the White House saloon this afternoon by James Taylor. The cause of the stabbing is not clear and the men are said to be on good terms.
