Allies press strong terms at fifth peace conference
At the fifth meeting of the peace conference the Allied powers laid out territorial demands on Turkey. Train robbery near Springfield nets $50,000
Two men stopped the Alton Hummer west of Iles this morning and forced engineer Frank Mc Laughlin to run the baggage car two miles. They blew open safes with dynamite, securing an estimated $50,000 in money and valuables while passengers were not harmed. Springfield sheriff and Alton detectives pursued the bandits. no injuries reported.

Captain William H. Van Schaick, master of the General Slocum, is to be pardoned by President Taft and freed on Christmas Day after nearly two years on parole. The 73 year old, once condemned for negligence in the 1904 disaster that killed 1,080, had an earlier lengthy service record on New York waters. His parole came via his wife Grace Scott and support from the American Mates and Pilots Association which helped to raise funds for a farm near Amsterdam, New York.
