Maurice Rouviere emerges as a potential president as Premier develops marked strength in the candidacy against Fallieres. The prospect does not excite widespread popular enthusiasm.
Paris dispatch notes Premier Rouvier as a potential late entrant as the National Assembly set January 18 at Versailles to elect a successor to President Loubet. Fallieres leads, with Doumer challenging. Loubet has declined a second term though could be pressed. Others including Bourgeois Brisson Deschanel and Thompson are listed as emergency candidates.
A report from Ewing between Fargo and St. George says a mob of negroes attacked a white man guarding a turpentine still last night. He fired, killing five men and two women and injuring seven others. A second report says a negro riot occurred with many wounded including women. two killed instantly and a woman killed.
The battleship Kearsarge at League Island Navy Yard sees command shift from Captain Raymond P. Rogers to Captain Herbert Winslow. Rogers goes ashore after sea service. Winslow, son of Rear Admiral John A. Winslow, will lead the ship as it departs for New York next Wednesday.

The Pachuca dispatch says the Santa Gertrude mine is on fire and about thirty miners were suffocated. Estimated damage could reach hundreds of thousands of dollars. No further details available.
Hamilton County year end figures show 3 859 marriage licenses issued and 687 court relief actions. Wives filed over two thirds of divorce suits and 215 alimony cases, with 173 custody actions. December leads alimony filings. men most often sue for desertion.
Norman G. Kenan president of Cincinnati Gas and Electric disrupted two porch climbers trying to enter through a second story window at his Brookline home last evening. The would be thieves fled after Kenan appeared catching them off guard during the Kenan residence dinner hour. Jewelry belonging to the Kenans was left behind if the criminals had succeeded. The suspects are believed identical to those who robbed Isaac Deutsch at 2303 Grandview Avenue Friday, escaping with $100 in jewelry.
General Leonard Wood asks the Philippine Commission to extend land laws to Zamboanga and Mindanao districts. Archbishop Harty negotiates with Italy to allow emigrants to Mindanao. Wood uses influence to attract settlers for the Moro Provinces.
Caleb Powers, prisoner in Newport jail, tears up recalling Charles Ehler confession about the Goebel murder. Powers vows justice and writes to Bakersfield County Hospital officials urging a full statement, noting his six years in jail limited his investigations.
Special Dispatch reports from San Francisco on December 23 reveal a telegram from Julia Fitzsimmons stating she is leaving New York forever. The message, received by Leon Friedman, Bob Fitzsimmons' manager, notes an attorney’s letter to reach Bob and mentions a companion. Fitzsimmons, who married Julia at the Palace Hotel on July 25 1903, responded emotionally.

The grand jury indicted eighteen Ohio bridge corporations including Adams Brothers J T Adams Jr agent Brackett Bellefontaine Indiana Champion Massillon Huston Canton King on charges of forming a price fixing combination. The state is said to be divided into districts with assigned firms to suppress competition and civil actions for damages are planned.
Washington December 23 Democrats plan to appoint a Northwest or Western representative as chairman. Rep Harvey Garber of Ohio, who led Pattison’s campaign, is likely to head the reorganized committee, with Granger of Rhode Island and Flood of Virginia among others considered. The party hopes to delay reorganization until March amid internal quarrels.
Henry Wagner and Samuel Bode were struck by a northbound Big Four Middletown Accommodation at Elmwood Place between Linden and Walnut streets. Bode, 19, sustained a fractured skull and internal injuries and is expected to die. Wagner, 2, is in serious condition.
