The Taft administration wins broad support after two weeks in session. Taft’s measured, constitutional approach earns praise from progressives and conservatives alike, with judicial appointments praised for bipartisanship and impartial outreach.
A House resolution calls a five member committee to probe Theodore Roosevelt’s presidential era railroad transportation charges and contracts with the Pennsylvania Railroad and other lines. Other items include navy cost savings from private shipbuilding, Senate quorum rules on vice presidents, Beveridge on tobacco coupons, direct election of senators, and Taft appointing H Clay Howard to a diplomatic post in Paris Kentucky backed by Senator Bradley.
The funeral of George B. Johnson, former treasurer of the General Methodist church trustees, will be held at Avondale Methodist Church this afternoon at 1 30. The body will lie in state from 1 o'clock. The Rev. Charles E. Schenck will preach the sermon and interment will be at Spring Grove cemetery.
Missouri Pacific Iron Mountain system workers including machinists blacksmiths boilermakers and sheet metal workers will return to work Wednesday morning December 21 after a settlement between company officials and striking employees. The agreement ends the dispute and is described as a company victory.
Charles Lewis a clerk for Joseph Sknon & Co. was arrested on a warrant charging the firm with receiving stolen goods and bound over to the grand jury. Detectives from Portsmouth say they found an express receipt and that a suspect confessed sending goods to the Middletown firm. Police also report a suitcase delivery and ten pairs of shoes seized.
In Columbus, Atlee Pomerene and Edward W. Hanley press for speaker support ahead of Thursday caucus. Vining and Kempel vie for key posts while Col. John L. Vance gains backers for possible senatorial bid. Labor and dry blocs influent the contest as leaders shift focus to the senate strain.
A Columbus Commercial Tribune report covers two forenoon debates on finance and insurance reforms. William H. Hotchkiss led a committee examining Union Central Life Insurance stock dividends, urging state-approval rules to bar capital increases without the insurance department's consent to protect policyholders. The report argues such reforms restore insurer duties and prevent stockholder gains at policyholders' expense.
In a solemn ceremony in Washington on December 19 Edward Douglas White rose from associate justice to chief justice of the United States Supreme Court. Chief Justice Harlan administered the judicial oath on the bench, with White holding a Bible kissed by predecessors as the crowd looked on.
Washington, Dec. 19 Charley Patt the president’s younger son is home for the holidays. He finds a detailed airplane model with a dummy engine and imagines a glide from the White House roof. He also acts as chief operator at the White House switchboard for an hour.
A mass convention of tobacco growers met at the Lexington courthouse to organize a new pool for the 1911 crop. Delegates from more than a dozen counties, including independent and pool groups, discussed a plan and formed committees to prepare for a general conference on January 5 to ratify pool plans.
The Cincinnati presbytery, by resolution, accepted the court ruling that set aside the merger of First Presbyterian with Presbyterian Church of the Covenant, restoring First Church’s ecclesiastical rights and allowing it to appoint its own pastor. Elder John McLeod is named as delegate. First Church gains control of its $500,000 property and purges merger-associated members.
A massive gas explosion at Grand Central station auxiliary power house in Manhattan killed ten people and injured about 125, with property damage in the millions. The blast shattered buildings, toppled walls, and sent glass and debris across streets as investigators probe the cause.
Arthur V. Hit, manager of the Reliance Loan company, first in the state convicted under the disorderly houses ruling for usurious loan offices. He was sentenced to pay a $500 fine plus costs, and his counsel immediately announced an appeal.
