Vicksburg Miss Dec 19 The steamer W T Scovill on the Vicksburg and Davis Bend trade exploded at Gold Dust Landing. Ten to sixteen men died and many injured, including white crew Captain Quackenboss Wade Quackenboss and clerk Joseph Smith. Negro deaths and injuries could not be tallied. The ship, carrying 1000 sacks cotton seed and 85 bales of cotton, was blown to pieces and began sinking after the blast. The Senator Cordill ferried injured and white dead to safety as investigators blamed a defective boiler plate.
