Mrs Cassie L Chadwick is described as weak and nervous ahead of a bankruptcy hearing before Referee Remington in Cleveland. Her attorney Dawley seeks a continuance while witness and property details are reviewed. a jail physician reports her condition improving.
In Rome on December 18 Pope Pius X attended the beatification of Gaspare del Bufalo. He did not walk to St Peter's, riding in the sedia festatoria due to illness. Over 30,000 worshipers filled the basilica for the ceremony and show of loyalty.
Marcel Habert the Nationalist chief returned to Paris after a five year banishment for plotting to overthrow the government. He was welcomed at Orleans Station by thousands and resumed control of the league of patriots at a St Paul Riding School meeting. The group endorsed a vigorous campaign for Paul Derplede and other exiles. Colonel Marchand declined to run for the Chamber of Deputies seat formerly held by Syveton.
A Crosby and Halsted street sash and door factory fire endangered two large People s Light and Coke gas tanks. Firefighters prevented an explosion though a wall collapse injured three men. Total loss pegged at 100000.
Mrs. Ella Fox of 3935 Elsmere Avenue inherits 10000 dollars and a half interest in Charles Burdick's Sulphur Springs hotel from his French estate secret. Burdick, wealthy real estate man, died two months ago after plans to wed Christmas Day with Fox. Fox learned the bequest from Burdick's partner Edward Hart, traveled to his home to settle matters, and will take charge of the hotel alongside caring for her six year old son.
About five thousand students joined a midday to evening protest in Moscow. Police fired blank volleys and sabers were used as crowds clashed near Tverskaya Street and Strastnaya Square. Sixty students wounded and three hundred arrested. one policeman fatally harmed.
Thousands of Cincinnati Methodists packed Music Hall as Bishop Spellmeyer received a warm welcome. Davis W. Clark presided and presented the church’s youth to the bishop. Mrs Mollie McElroy a social figure in Huntington arrested on a United States commissioner charge for using the mails fraudulently. Her husband J C McElroy was taken from a train on a similar charge. the pair alleged to have operated a green goods scheme through an office in Central City. McElroy alias Morn in jail with a bond posted for Mrs McElroy as several business men bail for her. A confession implicates six men and one woman in passing counterfeit money in Maysville Huntington and nearby towns.
In Ionia Michigan Edith Buck of Lyons refuses to testify against Harry Crawford amid a romance that angered her father. After Buck is accused of shooting at Crawford and perjury charges follow, Edith sits in contempt in jail saying she will stay until carried out in her coffin.
In Woodbury Cannon County Tennessee Thomas Potter a prominent merchant shot and killed attorney A J Smithson. The killing followed a courtroom dispute when Potter testified against Smithson in a sensational lawsuit. A female companion of Potter was berated on the street by Smithson who warned against associations with a man who would swear falsely. The men later argued and Smithson died.
Mary Hughes 41 of Pleasant street was arrested after leaving services at St. Paul Procathedral on a petit larceny charge. Sexton Harry Leach found a chatelaine bag and a purse with $3.50 claimed by Hughes. he later learned the bag belonged to Lydia Litherbury of Terrace Park. Leach halted Hughes in a crowd and Patrolman Manley arrived. Hughes claims a grievous mistake.
In Logansport Indiana on December 18, the alleged defalcations of Cass County Treasurer Frank Obenchain widen beyond first estimates. Shortages totaling 75 000 dollars include 50 000 advanced to private firms and a further 25 000, with bondsmen planning a 10 000 dollar reward to aid in the capture of Obenchain. The Miski Mine Furnace Company receiver action and a brief bank run are noted as consequences.
Tangier correspondent notes strong anti European sentiment in Morocco as tribes openly oppose foreign influence. Arthur Kerr of Buffalo died after a defective gasket on the Bethlehem steamer boiler blew, flooding the engine room with steam and hot water. Four fellow workers suffered severe scalds to legs hands limbs and face. John McEarl Peter OToole Stanley Rogers I L Walker were among the injured.
Mexico City reports in clerical circles that Mgr. Serafini apostolic delegate to Mexico will be elevated to cardinal at the next consistory. The honor would reward long service and his work restoring harmony and discipline in Mexican churches.
New York December 18 Police arrest Robert Baeckelein a Hotel Stratford clerk as a possible link to the Thanksgiving Day loss of diamonds valued at $30 000 belonging to Mrs E C Benedict. The maid testified handing the bag to the clerk on that day.
Dispatches from Port Arthur describe a stubborn defense as Japanese forces suffer heavy losses while the Russian garrison under General Stoessel holds the fortifications. Reports note eleven and sixteen inch mortars, heavy bombardment, and questions why the squadron was not sunk in deep water.
