Washington December 13. The timing of the holiday recess is undecided but a Friday start was proposed at the Ways and Means Conference. Recess may begin Wednesday next week and last until the Monday after New Year’s. Army and legislative appropriation bills are the focus this week with expected passage before recess.
From Havana reports say La Lucha and other Spanish papers dispute the death rumor of Maceo and expect Weyler to issue a public denial. Insurgent forces in the suburbs grow to thousands as entrenchment and new artillery increase. Spain sends two thousand troops, described as undersized, amid rising anti American sentiment and warnings to American correspondents.
In Constantinople on December 13 the powers require the Porte to recall envoy Saaded Bin Pasha within forty eight hours for allegedly thwarting reforms in Crete. Reforms included Christian governor nomination economic autonomy with tribute to the Sultan gendarmerie reorganization by European officers and a high court for Crete in Canea.
Paris reports The Gaulois alleges the Royal Niger Company of Britain is moving into French Niger territory toward Daomé, heightening colonial tensions and fears in December.

Special Dispatch notes he travels from Bellefontaine, Ohio, to Washington for the meeting. In Lexington, Ky, T Campbell plans to return to join the plumbing business after an inquiry into his city council links with an electric light contract. The grand jury found no bill against Campbell.
In Madrid Weyler tells a correspondent he returned to Havana to disperse rebels flocking to the province and plans to move on to Pinar del Rio to pacify the area in about three weeks. He calls Maceo’s death a terrible blow to insurgents and notes a grand homage by volunteers at the palace.
In Brownstown Indiana on December 13 a jury found Frank P Gates won 10000 damages against the Baltimore and Ohio Southwestern Railroad for the loss of his right arm while employed. The suit sought 30000 dollars.
Dedication exercises for Union Chapel at Morton in Greencastle County were held today with morning afternoon and evening sessions. The new structure cost six dollars and was presented by Dr. D H Moore of Cincinnati as a preacher.
Hopkinsville Kentucky reports a five year old boy child of Manson Bennett died after being left alone in a house when clothing caught fire from an open stove. The tragedy occurred yesterday in Hopkinsville.
In Parkerburg West Virginia a cow sickened near a glass plant last week and died after being killed. A local report states the animal’s stomach contained over half a peck of glass and more than a dozen nails, with one nail piercing its left lung. The glass is believed to have been swallowed with refuse straw from the plant.
Dayton Ohio December 14 The Frantz murder trial will open in Common Pleas Court tomorrow with the defense seeking a continuance until January. Prosecutors expect many days to select a jury and as many as one hundred witnesses may be called. The case may stretch to Christmas and beyond due to Saturday half holidays, likely pushing the trial to the January term.
President Cleveland left Washington for a shooting trip in South Carolina waters. He is fatigued from drafting his message and plans to be away about a week, traveling by rail to Georgetown and boarding the light house tender Wisteria to Winyah Bay as the guest of the Annandale Shooting Club with Captain Evans Commander Lamberton and Dr. O'Reilly.
President Cleveland arrived in Richmond at 7 10 PM to a greeting by about five hundred people. He stood on the rear platform for fifteen minutes exchanging handshakes and later hosted Postmaster Cullingsworth and other citizens aboard his car until 7 30 PM. He noted his stay in South Carolina would depend on Washington needs.
President Cleveland and party traveled in the private car Coronet through Petersburg at eight o'clock en route to Georgetown South Carolina. A handful of locals awaited a glimpse of the Chief Magistrate as the supper hour passed.
Springfield reports John L. Bushnell son of Governor A S Bushnell is critically ill with a dangerous typhoid fever. The governor and Mrs. Bushnell remain at his bedside amid alarm but hold hope for recovery as Dr Loving administers care and the family receives community sympathy.
Springfield Ohio December 13 Governor Bushnell reports a flood of letters and private assurances praising his firm stand against calling an extra session. He says he was elected on a platform promising biennial sessions and sees no need for an extra session unless an extraordinary emergency arises.
In Lexington Kentucky a ward creation gave the Mayor power to fill one council seat. At the recent election J D Scott was elected by free silver supporters hoping the Mayor would appoint him. Mayor Simrall appointed E B Drake and Pat Mooney, leaving Scott to contest the seat claiming entitlement.
Frankfort Kentucky December 13 John P Cozine editor of the Shelbyville News and a well known figure in state journalism is dying from complications of liver and kidney troubles He began in Indiana after the war and after moving to Shelbyville in 1874 he edited the Sentinel until 1886 when he started the News which he has run since then.
The Southern Ohio Poultry Association will hold its eleventh annual exhibition January 5 to 9 in Washington C H with Mr. Charlies McClare as judge. The event will feature premiums and prizes for top birds.
Two robbers attacked the Hotel Legrand barroom on Wells Street in Chicago at 6 am. A bartender, John Johns, was shot in the heart as a robber fired from an overcoat pocket after a struggle, and the assailants fled the scene.
Marshalltown Iowa December 13 an Hart aged 25 son of a pioneer farmer was shot dead by an unknown man who entered the house presumably to rob. A desperate struggle occurred. the murderer escaped but is pursued by armed citizens with bloodhounds. Lynching is possible if the suspect is captured.
Ames and Cavalho, New York experts, arrived to assess claims by Mrs. Nellie R. Craven regarding a forged pencil will and deeds to $500,000 in property. The dispute centers on a late Senator Fair estate valued up to 40 million dollars and a trust for his children.
Richmond Indiana December 13 A debate set between Harsham and bushc Colleges will discuss abolishing the present jury system. De Pauw University seeks a debate with Earlham on the same question.
State Auditor Guilbert is pursuing a plan to tax bank stock that has escaped levies. A Lorain case and a Niles Supreme Court decision challenge the practice of offsetting debts against stock to evade taxes. If successful, about $10,000 added county income is anticipated from $400,000 in local bank stock. Banks are expected to oppose the move.
In Cleveland on December 13 a man passed a forged check for $75,000 bearing Judge E T Hamilton's name. The instrument, drawn on Dime Savings and Building Company for C N Cunningham, prompted a delay and Cunningham left with a promise to return at 5 pm. He has not been seen since.
Railroad Commissioner J Fletcher Dempsey of Hopkins County will seek the seat to succeed Congressman Clardy in the Second District two years hence. Judge J C Chenault declares intent to head the Democratic bid in the Highland District.
At a large Wooster Wayne County meeting Democrats plan to celebrate Jacksons victory over the British at New Orleans on the anniversary of the battle, January 8. This marks the forty fourth consecutive Wooster celebration by the party.
In Elwood Indiana a large meeting of window green glass and flint glass workers convened to organize against nonunion labor. This kickoff gathering aims to connect later meetings at multiple locations and bring all workers under one umbrella.
Five masked burglars raided C. P. Bristow’s residence near Wooster. Mrs. Alice Baxter used a lamp as a defense, knocking a robber and protecting Bristow. Jennie Baxter escaped to raise alarm with Cyrus Franks, police alerted, burglars fled with two watches and jewelry. John Leavers arrested with mask and revolver found on him.
James H Hall 58 died suddenly on a Third Street electric car after attending St Joseph's Church with his daughter Jeannette. He collapsed, saying he could not breathe, and died from heart disease before medical help could reach him. He formerly served as County Auditor and held other public posts.
Speaker Sleeper announced a joint House and Senate committee to set time and place for the Seventy-second General Assembly reunion. Members include J E Blackburn C H Bosler Levi C Goodale George Hafer Curtis E McBride with a joint meeting set for December 18 at the State House.
In Indianapolis on December 13, Mrs Catherine Corbett, 70, was asphyxiated in her Coburn Street home after a gas leak from a closed kitchen damper allowed fumes to fill the house. Her daughter Miss Mary Corbett, 40, was unconscious and near death. the two had lived alone and were last seen Saturday night. Neighbors broke in after missing them for the day.
Sterling W Turner a Vanderbilt junior and President of the University Young Men's Christian Association, aged 23 from Wartrace Tennessee, cut his throat with a razor in his dorm room around noon and was found dead at 3 pm by companions after failed entry attempts, amid reports of over study.
The body of horse dealer Ed Fetters was found buried with a mule near Knox Indiana. His partner William Sutherlin was arrested charged with his murder. The grave was carefully dug and concealed. Authorities say several people may be implicated.
Breckinridge will take part in the Fields Adkins murder trial opening today in Baboursville Kentucky. Notables such as Colonel Breckinridge Judge Riddle and Fulton French have arrived for the session with large crowds expected to witness the proceedings.

Edmund Wright aged 20 killed himself at Calvary Cemetery in Toledo over the grave of his late fiancee Miss Claudia Osborne who died last week at St. Vincent's Hospital. He went to the cemetery with a former friend, placed flowers on the grave, and shot himself through the heart with a revolver while holding a crucifix.
Special Dispatch to the Commercial Tribune from Columbus Ohio reports work on the State House improvement is unlikely this year due to questions about the constitutional validity of the appropriation measure. A $400,000 appropriation awaits legislative action and will begin only after the next legislature reconvenes and approves funding. The law may require a two-thirds vote, but the remainder of the bill is viewed as constitutional and will be acted upon once funding is provided. Attorney General Monnett has been asked for an opinion and will not speak until released.

In Tyler County West Virginia a speakeasy proprietor offered the new prosecuting attorney a stake in his hideaways if he would drop charges for illegal liquor sales. The man named Sordatieliy Ganiteek reportedly presented the offer on Friday.
