Ashes of Columbus Moved to Naval Ship in Havana
In Havana on December 12 the ashes of Columbus were moved from the cathedral to the steamer Conde de Venadito. The steel casket was found intact by Senor Gavin in the presence of the Captain General and Spanish officials. The procession proceeded to Machina wharf where the casket was placed on a gun carriage and towed by twenty five warships to the cruiser. A fifteen gun salute sounded and a single gun fired at intervals all day in honor of an Admiral. The squadron including the Conde de Venadito Alfonso XIII and Infanta Isabel planned to sail for Cadiz that night.
