Seven Die as Susquehanna Bridge Collapses
Forty men worked on the traveler when the span fell during high water at Mifflinville eight miles north of Bloomsburg. Seven men were killed and about twenty injured, some fatally, with names listed from Selins Grove to Mifflinville and New York. The collapse was blamed on rising flood water washing away false work, with one worker alleging a large tree trunk struck the false work before the fall. Miraculous escapes were reported as rescuers reached the scene at night.
