Rodolfo Gaona the famed Mexican bullfighter known as the Idol of the bullring is under arrest in Mexico City on serious charges linked to the suicide of 15 year old Maria Luisa Noecker. The girl, from a wealthy family, eloped to a ball then returned home and shot herself. The case has created widespread shock in the capital.
Miss Mary Scott of Baltimore killed herself by swallowing carbolic acid after leaving a note the parents say expresses unrequited love for C. L. Shull of Harrisburg whom she had never met. She was about 20 and had only known him through a friend.
Mrs. William Tate, ill with tuberculosis, died after her daughter gave carbolic acid by mistake for brandy. Toledo dispatch reports the incident occurred December 8 with Associated Press noting the failed attempt to provide timely medical assistance.
Mrs. Sarah Connelly of 486 East Spring Street Columbus writes Acting Mayor Bathgate asking help in locating her son John Connelly 20 who left home eight months ago. Bathgate refers the letter to Chief Millikin hoping the youth may be found in time for his mother to see him.
In Columbus on December 8 Frank Grimes, a colored man who killed Blanche McKnight after a romance, hanged himself in his jail cell last night. His body was found today. he had just been sentenced to die in the electric chair on March 27.
A band of night riders attacked the Ed Judy residence at Beaver Baptist in Harrison county and burned his barns. Several shots were fired and power lines cut. Judy escaped unharmed despite the attack. The incident occurred as the Burley Tobacco Society moves to enforce contracts and block sales to independents following a large remaining outside pool.
The 1908 internal revenue report shows Ohio tobacco manufacturers produced 41,893,962 pounds of tobacco, a 7,000,000 pound rise from 1907, with plug tobacco also up to 14,406,587 pounds. Tax collections rose to 2,513,637.12 dollars, and Ohio ranked as the third largest cigar state after New York and Pennsylvania. Kentucky saw a drop in cigars and tobacco use, while overall U.S. production and cigarette output increased.

A northwest wind and 10 degree temperature forced East Ohio Gas to halt service to fifty plus factories. About 10,000 workers were laid off while artificial gas plants were repaired. Private homes used more gas, but overall supply dwindled leaving hotels with only soup in some cases. Temperatures ranged from 9 to 20 degrees throughout the day.
Sworn affidavits by August W. Loose and George H. Dunkle allege Dr. Cook promised them 4000 dollars for help preparing polar observations now held by the University of Copenhagen. The Times prints a facsimile memorandum directing observations from Sverte vaag to the pole and notes motives to seek full payment.
George Preston Sheldon former president of the Phoenix Fire Insurance Company of Brooklyn was indicted for first degree larceny by a New York grand jury for allegedly misappropriating about 45000 dollars over twenty two years. He was not arrested due to poor health and the grand jury will probe other possible connections to the fund speculation.

Mrs. Edward H. Harriman has taken up active management of the Harriman estate and spent her first day in Fifth Avenue offices as a New York businesswoman. She will observe regular office hours three or four days weekly.
Former Nicaragua president Cardenas heads about 500-strong force from Costa Rica toward Managua to back Bastrado in the Central American conflict. Mexican reports say Mexico will aid an amicable settlement with Charles Magoon named as U. S. special envoy to meet Senor Enrique Creel. The United States plans to ensure Nicaragua follows any agreed rules.
Dr. M E Velasquez, a Nicaraguan exile who arrived from Panama, alleges draconian oppression by President Zelaya spanning nine years with six imprisonments. He says Zelaya’s spies block mail to exiles in Panama, while about ten thousand Costa Rican refugees back Estrada and predict Zelaya’s downfall.
PORTO CORTEZ Honduras December 8 Associated Press martial law was declared after state of expectancy rose over a possible invasion by General Manuel Bonilla who was ousted in 1907. The plan reportedly involves alliances with Guatemala and El Salvador to overthrow President Davila and attack Zelaya in Nicaragua.
Excitement runs high in Clarksburg area as an oil strike on the E. E. Swiger farm near Shinnston yields 275 barrels an hour. The Swiger gusher was struck by a Philadelphia company of several men who may rise from poverty to wealth. About 500 workers build a reservoir to handle the well's abnormal flow.
Samuel Williams, 28, a Cincinnati bookkeeper, and Miss Ametia Dessel, 25, also of Cincinnati, applied for a marriage license in Butler county probate court but were refused due to the bride’s nonresidence. Miss Dessel wore a mourning costume.
The Ohio delegation led by Albert Bettinger and 500 advocates from Cincinnati and Ohio Valley Improvement Association take a central role at the National Rivers and Harbors congress opening in Washington.
