Chicago reports a broad cold snap with near zero readings in the Northwest and a frostline creeping southward. Interstate trains delayed, roads iced, and 150 to 200 trucks stranded on a high level bridge as accidents multiply citywide in the icy conditions.
Nine people were hospitalized in Cleveland after freezing rain created icy pavements. One victim is probably fatally injured and several others are seriously hurt as a crash of injuries spread across the city. The ice cleared by noon.
In Columbus on December 7 amid subzero winds in the West and sleet in Northern Ohio, delphiniums blossomed and many bushes showed buds after several days of unusually mild December weather.
Two of the three army airplanes that departed Tucson for Rockwell Field arrived in San Diego in four hours forty minutes. Major Ralph Royce and Lt Corkhill piloted the two planes. A third plane piloted by Lt McMullin diverted to El Centro for fuel and was to reach Rockwell Field later. The group had left Brooks Field, San Antonio, Texas, on Monday.
Secretary of War Weeks urged concentrating on completing major projects at the Rivers and Harbors Congress. Major General William Black warned that freight car shortages raise costs and risk winter coal shortages, urging coordinated use of railways waterways highways and airways to ease transportation.
Police planned to bring Walter P. Nolan alias L M Riley and James Watson alias James Reed to Cincinnati on charges of passing counterfeit travelers’ checks. Cincinnati merchants George H Newstedt Company Bankhardt Company Stetson Clothes Shop Greenwald Jewelry Company were complainants. The suspects were arrested in New Orleans after agents located them.
Judge P. Booth of Ironton Ohio was empowered to act with full authority in the bankruptcy proceedings of the Tri-State Brick Tile and Coal Company Ironton by Judge John W. Peck of the United States District Court yesterday.
Jacob H. Reinstattler and Emil Krone were named in warrants by Oscar Schuessler of Ehrmantraut Bros. for practicing optometry without licenses. The action follows a Cincinnati Association of Optometrists inquiry into unlicensed optical work by jewelers, with test cases planned and further warrants to follow to protect public sight.
Jacob Warm secretary treasurer of the Ohio Building and Construction Company denied claims that Cincinnati firms were barred from war contracts. He said he neither made nor wrote about such issues and that the company did not seek wartime work. Frank Messer testified before a Federal Grand Jury in Washington regarding army cantonment contracts.
Mt. Clemens Michigan December 7 137 airplanes logged 292372 miles without injuries to any pilot during national airplane races at Selfridge Field last month according to Lieutenant T W Blackburn operations officer. Racing planes covered 102210 miles while visiting cross country flights totaled 190210 miles and the twelve mail planes averaged 1000 miles each.
Commercial circles note that at least 85 000 bales are stored in Lower California warehouses and cannot reach Mexico City due to insufficient transportation facilities.
