President Taft's address to Congress signals a conservative turn in regulation. The final paragraph outlines stopping anticorporation legislation while urging sane domestic and international business rules amid party realignments and potential 1912 shifts.
Congress begins the long session with the Taft tariff plan in view and a Cummins resolution aiming to revise a tariff schedule. Insurgents and regulars seek harmony as Ballinger Pinchot committee reports are due, with Democrats ready to move on the findings and potential resolutions.
Congress gave respectful attention to Taft's message but few members voiced support for major recommendations this session as time is short before March 4. Latta announced the president would speak in writing and read the long document to both houses, with attention waning as members studied printed copies.
A treaty based arbitration at The Hague awarded a settlement satisfactory to both the United States and Great Britain. Secretary of State Mr. Root and Senator Withy Root led the American case, with Root serving without compensation as leading counsel. The award concludes nearly ninety years of tension over fisheries rights and marks the first arbitration under the 1898 treaty.
President Taft urges enforcement of existing laws with reduced new legislation and economy in administration. He backs ship subsidies for American shipping, opposes general tariff revision until December, and favors a permanent tariff board. Fortification of the Panama Canal gets a $19 006 000 appropriation and anti injunction and federal incorporation laws are renewed. Mary Baker Glover Eddy will be buried near Halcyon Lake in Mount Auburn cemetery Cambridge in a planned tomb to be built next spring. Three remaining lots in the circle around the lake were bought by Eddy’s friends and a brief service will precede the move to the Mount Auburn receiving tomb. Eddy’s church directors take charge of church affairs and discipline, while funerals in Chestnut Hill unfold with few outward signs of mourning.
A Democratic organization led by W L Finley and Edward W Farney plans a statewide caucus to select a slate for Ohio Senate officers. William Coshocton would be president pro tem and William Gosioie of Galion clerk, with Stockwelt a rival candidate for president pro tem. The plan seeks votes from 19 Democratic senators-elect and involves a joint committee with representatives to draft bills.
Police intervened to quiet pandemonium at Walhalla cafe in Walhalla Kentucky after a middle aged man identifying as Eddie Green of Ludlow reportedly shattered a front door glass. Witnesses described various alleged projectiles and Green’s intoxication prior to his removal to the station.
Two Black men were found hanged at Depluble Branches two miles from Monroeville after being arrested on a charge of burning a barn. The item also urges buying Christmas presents early in December to help workers behind counters and on delivery wagons.
A Detroit report says sixteen firms and thirty-two individuals including six Buckeye officials were indicted on antitrust charges. The case ties to a civil suit to dissolve a combination controlling about 85 percent of enamel ware output, with yearly sales around ten million dollars. Indictments cite the Sherman act. firms named include Standard Sanitary Mfg Co and J. L. Mott Iron Works among others. individuals include Theodore A. Ahrens and Francis J. Torrance.
General Charles Grosvenor hailed President Taft's message as one of the finest statesmanlike documents he has read. He praised Taft for thoroughness and clear rationale and urged voters to give him another term. He discussed Ohio political prospects, noting Attee Pomerene leads and John R. McLean’s potential if he runs.
Senator Cummins and other lawmakers visit the White House to push court appointments. The president narrows his list but will not announce new justices next week. The Senate adjourns to honor four deceased members, and new senators take oaths. House business proceeds after a snow delay with prayer by Dr Couden.
