In Jackson Mississippi on December 5 Gov Bilbo announced a state wide drive against crime after Virgil Dunn escaped from the State Farm was wounded and captured by state troopers at his farmhouse. Sixty guards surrounded the property at dawn and a deputy sheriff had called for aid. Dunn fled out a back door but was shot by a second line of troopers after his son tried to resist with a gun. He was seriously wounded.

Leigh-Manuelle làs jailed for bigamy as the "bride" wept at her father’s home. Police were called after a confrontation in Sayville when they returned.

Sigmund Weiss, jewel thief and repeat offender, was killed after a plan to murder Judge Donnellen unraveled in the Criminal Courts Building. Guards Karlstrand and Williams were wounded, and John Doyle fired the fatal shots. Weiss had been en route to face a life sentence for a prior jewelry heist.

The room showed a violent struggle and the house was ransacked A bed silk scarf and a sweater wrapped over the head were found with her body Police suspect robbery Notes near the scene read I have gone away for a few days Take care of the stuff and I have gone to M O afoot Investigators puzzled by the notes Mrs Jones was last seen alive about 8 30 pm by two grocer boys Her car was found at the foot of a grade near the farm this morning with the doors locked from inside and the body discovered after neighbors forced entry No one yet identified as the killer Money was reported missing from her home and authorities continue the investigation
In Campbell County Kentucky a jury in Newport found Bodstein versus Kremer awards full car damages while Kremer sought 1000 for lost teeth and 3832.31 for car damages. The verdict declared the automobile worth more than a set of natural teeth with the owner facing dental restoration.
In Covington Kentucky a Kenton County jury ordered the Louisville and Nashville Railroad to pay 35000 to George Hall a former Covington policeman and car assembler for the loss of his left hand. Hall is the father of seven motherless children and was represented by Sawyer A. Smith. Rail firm’s Shelly D. Rouse said he would appeal.
Wilhelm Miklas, Christian Socialist and head of the National Assembly, was chosen president by Parliament on the third ballot. He defeated Karl Renner with 94 votes to 91 on the first ballot, and 94 to 26 with blanks later. final tally was Miklas 104? (text unclear) with 91 blanks.
A violent earthquake in Tchirpan yesterday damaged many houses built after last spring's shocks. The population spent the night in the open.
Dr James M Doran Commissioner of Prohibition told the House Appropriations Committee that effective policing would require about 800 million dollars annually plus a nationwide court system. He noted improved enforcement but said smuggling remains a serious problem with drugs from Canada and European routes still feeding U S markets. The 1930 enforcement bill would approach 45 million, with major sums for the Prohibition Bureau Coast Guard and Customs and additional tens of millions for courts and jail upkeep.
Mrs Eva Stamana 38 of 2024 Gladstone Ave was struck by a locomotive backing into the Pennsylvania Railroad Merivale street crossing and lost her left leg. She worked as a shirt ironer at Raith Mack Shirt Company and was taken to General Hospital in serious condition. James Dupree of 652 Delta Ave was the engineer in charge.
Mrs Helen F Bishop 46 of 58056 Wyatt Ave was praised for a powerful home brew by Harvey McKeever as he testified for her husband Isaac Bishop in a divorce case. Judge Hoffman granted a divorce on neglect with a $2500 settlement under a prenuptial agreement.
Washington D C December 5 speakers at the National Rivers and Harbors Congress stressed waterway value for big and small cities and urged cooperation of four transportation sectors. Secretary of War Davis noted progress yet underused river and lake capacity. Cohen and O Keefe praised public port operation in New York and New Orleans. Rodgers predicted Cincinnati and Pittsburgh may rise to London scale via inland wave level systems.
Washington December 5. Representative Huddleston of Alabama says Hoover's South American goodwill tour may encroach on the Diplomatic Service. Representative La Guardia of New York defends the voyage as likely to do good, but regrets it is aboard a battleship.
In Covington Oklahoma on December 5 Mrs Dave Hartman 55 died with her daughter Pauline 17 and grandson Samuel Gordon Jr 4 when a house fire destroyed their home.
