Also reported, the Congress arrived at Falmouth with captain and mate washed overboard and dead. Additionally two Gloucester schooners Tel M. Hines and Henry M. Stanley wrecked in Newfoundland gale. The John R. Bradley, famed for Cook’s Arctic expedition, is missing.
Advices report the British bark Matterhorn foundered near Umatilla Reef about November 27. Four sailors plus the first mate and steward drowned. twenty seven crew saved. The captain, second mate, and twenty five crew reached Cape Flattery in lifeboats and arrived at the Umatilla Reef lightship on Friday.
