In Savannah a Brunswick special says Section Foreman Hartman his wife and her daughter Miss Carrie Hedley were insulted by soldiers from the First Ohio Regiment as they watched the unit march to Huntsville. The group followed to the Hartman home and fired. Hartman and the women returned fire wounding two soldiers, one seriously.
Washington, Aug 30 General Miles faces inquiry over recent interviews and dispatches he published with the War Department not made public The War Department will not discuss the matter until his return and Secretary Alger says no controversy with subordinates will be entered into The department deems Miles action a breach of military regulations but no court can pursue it yet

In Columbus on August 30 1898 Governor Bushnell received a wire from Secretary of War Alger asked by Dr Scott Captain Stephenson of Mt Vernon and Mayor Hunt to intercede for sick members of the Fourth Regiment in Puerto Rico seeking possible return home if it does not hinder service ASA Bushnell. the governor asks what he can tell the citizens of Ohio.
At Lexington camp on August 30 officers learn Governors will determine which regiments remain in service. Several officers rush home to persuade their Governors to keep their units active. The encampment records its first death as typhoid fever claiming Christian Faulsen of Company G, Twelfth Minnesota, buried yesterday.
The Roanoke arrived in Seattle with 459 passengers and gold dust valued around 1.5 million dollars. About seventy-five travelers held large sums, with M. W. Jenkins at 538 thousand and others like Theodore Anderson, George Carmack, Stick Jim, Tagish Charley, Ike Powers, H. Doane, and F. Renaud reporting substantial amounts. A theft incident surfaced as three sacks of dust, totaling about 24 thousand dollars, were found missing from a stateroom, with Albert Fox, William Folmer, and Dr. C F Adams named as owners. Passengers were detained for questioning but no thief was identified.
Newport News Aug 30 The battleship Kentucky moved from the dry dock to the Hercules crane to receive its armored conning tower weighing over eighty tons. The vessel had its bottom painted docking keels and rudder completed. Also noted is the torpedo boat Gwin No. 16 under Lieutenant Clarence S. Williams arriving at Hampton Roads.

The steam whaler Fridtjof, carrying Walter Wellman and expedition members, returns after landing at Cape Tegathoff. On the voyage back they met Dr. A G Northers’ Franz Josef Land expedition at Koenigskar Island and learned that search for missing balloonist Prof. Andree has proved futile.

Several officers, including Byrne Beacon and Eberle, redirected to Cuba and Jacksonville for duty. others relieved from Camp Meade and discharged.
Special Dispatch reports in Columbus Ohio that President McKinley through private secretary J Addison Porter assures Mrs Thomas R Biddle wife of Captain Biddle of Company Fourth O V I L that her husband will have a full hearing and no unfair advantage. The move indicates Colonel Coit and Captain Biddle may explain matters at an official investigation.
