Cape Town reports warlike tension stalls trade and causes distress in towns like Johannesburg. About 200 horses landed at Delagoa Bay for the Transvaal are held awaiting instruction. Local women are preparing a petition to Queen Victoria urging peace, to be circulated for signatures across the colony.
The Times editorial reacts to Cape Premier Schreiner’s claim he would keep the Cape Colony aloof in war. It calls this a startling misconception of duty, stating that when the Queen’s government declares war, all loyal subjects must not keep aloof but strive to bring the struggle to a successful end.
London dispatch notes Pretoria’s stance as Uitlander leaders press for Milner’s program with Britain’s expanded demands. It cites Cecil Rhodes as erroneous in predicting Kruger will yield but claims Kruger Volksraad and Nation will resist unconditional demands while offering reform on reported terms.
Blanche Molineux visited her husband at Tombs Prison with lawyer Barrow S Weeks. Molineux kissed her through the grating and spoke briefly before returning to his cell, the first such visit since his arrest.
West Point reports cadet Philips Smith of Nebraska was dismissed by court martial for hazing after a prior suspension. He hazed General Frederick D. Grant’s son, received disgraceful dismissal, and left on the train home. Colonel Mills vows zero tolerance for hazing.
In Parkersburg on August 23, Reese Bradford struck W. E. White with an oak plank after White intercepted two apples Bradford tossed to a coworker. White died from the blow and Bradford is jailed.
Special dispatch from Frankfort reports a Jackson County feud over a county judge primary ending in a gun battle between State Senator W H Clark and the Hayes brothers at McKee. Clark was shot in the foot and Hayes was struck in the breast. Mrs Clarke aided her husband with a Winchester but bullets caused no further injuries. No physician is available in Jackson County for treatment.
Bob Gregory, killed in Clay County Sunday night, was buried today in London Kentucky. Authorities name Alex Fisher as the shooter while Floyd Wolfe fired four shots. Gregory supported the Griffin faction and was Ed Fisher’s brother, killed in the Philpot Griffin clash on July 17. Report says the killers celebrated drunkenly after the killing.
Rioting and disorder broke out in Cleveland during a strike on the Big Consolidated Street Railway lines. Four cars were nearly demolished as hundreds attacked with stones. police under Captain Bradley restored order after clashes at Central avenue near the C and P R R crossing. Motormen and conductors were assaulted, with one seriously injured. A later mob of about 3000 gathered at Central and Lincoln. police under Sergeant Prang protected a crew, with many arrests expected.
Molders at Jeffersonville Car Works held a meeting and voted not to use cores made by replacements from the strike. The move suspends the entire plant tomorrow morning and makes operation impossible without molders and coremakers.
Zanesville Ohio August 20. John R. McLean leads the Democrats in Ohio securing party organization while anti-McLean Kilbourne faction battles over permanent chair and district delegates. Congressmen Norton and Haskell figures are sidelined as McLean's camp pushes to name governor and control credential and central committees amid district by district contests and last minute maneuvering.
The Cincinnati contest over Kilbourne and McLean framed a day of parades and political theater with Kilbourne and Duckworths greeted by cheering crowds. Delegations from Franklin County Hamilton County and others marched to salute the rivals amid bands banners and a tense atmosphere.
