Peconic Sinks Off Florida After Gale Strikes Coal Ship
Survivors from the steamer Peconic bound for New Orleans tell of a sudden sinking after a heavy sea caused cargo to shift. Twenty two crew aboard, including a Spanish and an Italian sailor, reached Amelia Island by small boat. Captain Jones and several crewmen named, voyage began Philadelphia August 19 with coal cargo of about 1154 tons. The two sailors were rescued, cared for locally, as authorities verify the disaster.
