Peking dispatches sketch a Asia crisis with Britain pressing for sphere control in China. Tsung-li Yamen and Sir Claude MacDonald clash while a British fleet concentrates at Wei Hai Wei and Hankow. Russian and British moves signal possible conflict with China and Korea fraught with diplomacy and threats.
A mountain cloudburst at Ponce, Puerto Rico floods rivers and destroys the bridge linking town and port, hindering General Miles reception and complicating troop transportation home. Several camps were washed out and travel disrupted.
In Columbus Ohio a contractor's eight year old son gathered toadstools mistaken for mushrooms on the State University farm. His mother Mrs. Ebright and four children were violently sick and remain ill though out of danger.
In Troy Township Delaware on August 26 a typhoid outbreak follows a church social at Troy Chapel attended by seventy five. Ice cream and lemonade served to guests left twenty two ill with malignant cases. Water is boiled, wells abandoned, experts to inspect the cause as new cases rise.
South Bend Ind Aug 26 Honn Clem Studebaker telegraphs son Colonel George Studebaker 157th Indiana Volunteers to cover all necessities for the comfort of the sick in his regiment at Fernandina and to pay railroad expenses for sending home sick men who lack funds
Special Dispatch reports from Pineville Kentucky that Bige Jones is in custody for conspiring with James Lurber to blow up the Bell County Jail. Sheriff Broughton pursues Gambriel, the other defendant in the case.
Samuel Staten, a West Virginia lumber camp foreman, was stabbed during a fight among lumber workers near Panther W Va. He was brought to Columbus Ohio in a dying condition by D H Moore and died after surgery at Protestant Hospital. Moore seeks a quiet burial and police plan further investigation.
President and Mrs. McKinley plan a brief Cleveland visit next Tuesday or Wednesday, traveling from Somerset Pa to stay with Abner McKinley and then guests of Mr. and Mrs. Myron T. Herrick at their Euclid Heights home. He seeks rest and avoids public demonstrations, with limited calls from personal friends only. Senator Hanna may return from the West, allowing a possible stop at his lakeside summer home.
Ex Governor Claude Matthews lies between life and death at Isaac Meharry’s home ten miles north of Crawfordsville after a paralysis strike during an Old Settlers meeting. Doctors say active life is over and recovery is doubtful though brief responses may occur. his wife and daughter remain at his bedside.
In Washington on August 26 the War Department issued an order extending the furlough of volunteers from thirty days to sixty days.
