Readable reports describe unrest in Turkey with shops sacked and bazars invaded as crowds surged through urban districts. Several districts faced curfews and clashes between demonstrators and security forces limited trade and disrupted daily life.
In Constantinople the Hintchakist Armenians seize the Ottoman Bank at 10 30 PM firing on guards and provoking widespread looting. Police suffer casualties as riots spread through Galata and other districts. Bomb explosions and foreign ships arrive as unrest continues with hundreds of workers and authorities involved.
Sheriff Leverton received a letter from Miss May Black of Carrollton Mo alleging that William Mitchell the traveler held in Huntington is a fraud. The missive says Mitchell, alias Murphy, possesses five hundred twenty five dollars and the will of John C. Clark involving millions, and demands disposal before release. Mitchell is jailed pending arrival of identifying parties.
A correspondent reports Cuenca hill stronghold collapsed, signaling near end of Alfaro rebellion led by Vega. Clergy were said to fund and arm the movement. News reached the Bureau from Guayaquil with evident triumph in Alfaro’s camp.
The Irish National Alliance appeals to Irish Americans for funds to relieve prisoners released and to be released from English prisons. Their health is said to be shattered. Contributions should be sent to Hon. P. V. Fitzpatrick, Treasurer, 154 Twenty second street, Chicago Illinois.

Coxey and Browne prominent as talks extend and adjournments follow with plans to fuse and place electors.
A Cincinnati resident is appointed president of the Leaguers organization. The move marks a leadership change within the group.
In Milwaukee on August 26 Q D Woodmansee of Cincinnati won the National League presidency by 810 to 804 over Gordon. Gen McAlpin stepped aside, and delegates from Ohio and Illinois clashed over support. The platform backed Republican protection and honest money, with Detroit slated for the 1897 convention.
Columbus Ohio August 26 Some 600 patients from Columbus State Hospital were taken on their annual outing to Hiawathane near Mt Vernon. Supt Richardson started the custom in 1893 and the hospital claims to be the first in the U S to show such a large group could be treated safely. Fifty attendants rode the special train to guard the pic nickers and monitor the lake banks for potential crises.
At Dunlow West Virginia the pay train on the Norfolk and Western collided with a fast freight at a curve this afternoon wrecking the pay train and seven freight cars. Fireman Vance was fatally hurt and engineer Floyd Turner was severely injured. Traffic was halted for six hours. Money from the wreck was scattered but most was recovered.
An unknown black man attempted to break into the kitchen of Charles Bekurs to assault Mrs Bekurs, escaping after Mrs Bekurs raised the alarm. Police and citizens hunt the suspect as lynching is debated by prominent residents amid renewed terror.
The 1896 Republican League gathering adjourned after referals to the Executive Committee. D Woodmansee, newly elected president, presided at the mass meeting in the Exposition Building. The Executive Committee met at Pfister and organized for the fray. Woodmansee heads to Waukesha then Chicago for a Lincoln Club reception.
Elwood Indiana Aug 26 report of a fatal shooting after landlord Joseph Davis ejected John Landers from Union Hotel. Landers sought revenge with a club. the pair met in a saloon where Davis shot Landers in the neck, the bullet passing the spinal column. Davis surrendered and is jailed.
In Manchester, Clay County, yesterday, supporters of David G. Colson and John G. White confronted amid threats. Brit Davis, Colson ally, armed with a Winchester, marched to Beverly White's office. White disarmed him, Jorge Parker intervened, tensions rose as White's allies arrived. both sides are armed and a tragedy seems imminent.
British forces demand Said Khalid surrender by nine tomorrow morning or face bombardment from warships. Admiral Rawson and the British Consul urged all British subjects to embark by eight. Poisoned Sultan theory grows as Khalid fortifies and unrest spreads.
Said Khalid remains in control of Palace Square in Zanzibar with 700 armed Askaris. British warships Philomel Thrush and Sparrow have landed sailors to guard the British Consulate where women are housed. Commanders await orders from London as Khalid proclaims himself Sultan after the death of Hamid Bin Thwain Bin Said.
Thomas B. Watson in his paper asks to be notified of his nomination and accuses Marion Butler of misstating facts about notifying Populist nominees. He cites Gen Weaver and Gen Field being notified in 1892 and asks the committee to act as instructed, questioning Senator Allen’s conduct and Bryan’s reliance on Populist support.
In Charleston West Virginia on August 26 Miss Annie Belle Watson of St Paul Minnesota was swimming to the Ella Layman towboat from a church excursion barge near Brownstown when she fell between the barge and the boat and drowned. It was reported she was visiting in the city at the time.
Friends of Johnny Wilson hear of the passing of Mrs Wilson after a long illness. She died at their flat after a period of invalidism, ending a life intertwined with the circus world and shared by Mr Wilson.
Canton Ohio August 26 1896 Major McKinley issues formal acceptance letter to Hon John M Thurston and others outlining opposition to free coinage of silver. He argues free silver would ruin labor value and government parity warning of a silver basis and monetary chaos.
