In Darien Georgia a deputy was shot dead prompting the sheriff to urge the governor to speed additional National Guard or state troopers to restore order and secure the area. Local officials report a manhunt is underway and details remain scarce.
In Darien Georgia on August twenty fifth a white mob faces a feared outbreak after the killing of Deputy Sheriff Townsend by John Delagell a Negro. Regulators patrol the town with militia and arrests continue while a jail crowd grows and a reward is offered.
A 11 PM conference in Darien Georgia between Sheriff Blount militia officials and a citizens group orders decisive daylight action on armed negroes massed in Delagells swamp twelve miles from Darien. Colonel Lawton in Savannah directs Liberty County troops and McIntosh Dragoons to move to the scene with citizen volunteers by 3 AM. Governor Candler grants plenary militia power. no executive call needed.

Commandant General Joubert warned field officers against provoking a power conflict and said no foreigner not volunteering would be coerced to bear arms. Viljoen floated confiscating property of armed inhabitants and warned of military rule in Johannesburg with British subjects expelled if war begins.
