Special Dispatch reports Henry Ackermann, 88, arraigned on a lunacy charge after attempting to kill himself by setting his bed on fire. He was jailed pending a sanity exam by the Probate Judge and died an hour after his release.

Adolph Luetgert expressed emotion by kissing his sons as they appeared in court. The defense attorney and the State Attorney foresee about ten days to complete juror selection.
A Nanaimo dispatch reports Prince Luigi of Savoy and 50 Italians reached Mt. St. Elias summit on July 31 at noon. The altitude shown is 18 100 feet. The expedition lasted fifty one days on snow and ice without sickness or accident.
George M. Coffin, Assistant Comptroller of the Currency, released a July 23, 1897 bank report showing total resources at 3.563 billion dollars, the highest in system history, with individual deposits at 1.770 billion dollars. Loans and discounts stood at 1.978 billion, cash in bank 414 million, amid a four-year liquidation.
Pittsburg reports a plan to clear the Unity labor camp near Plum Creek after a spike in violence and lawlessness. Railroad workers will gather employee lists and, with armed guards, force out women and gamblers at the camp, prompting terror and farm losses as residents fear venturing onto roads and plan a meeting to decide action.

Judge O Rourke of the Circuit Court declares county treasurers in Indiana eligible for 2 percent fees on each delinquent taxpayer notice and 50 cents for each levy in addition to their salaries. In Allen County Mr Hunter gains the $1 236 in fees.
The Newport mine in Ashland Wisconsin a major Gogebic Range asset was sold to Ferdinand Schiessinger of Milwaukee and Mark Hanna of Cleveland. The property also includes the Bonnie mine and nearby unexplored land for about 250000 dollars. 125 workers were put to work as one shaft is opened with plans to increase staff next week.
A bolt struck the residence and barn of William Reeder south of Pittwood, Elwood. The barn and five horses were consumed by the fire.

Frank Dalton, an employee of the Indianapolis Tent and Awning Company, found a valuable oblong pearl near White River about twelve miles from Indianapolis during a company picnic. He sold it after a jeweler praised its quality, rejecting a $2 offer.
Three convicts escaped from the Jeffersonville Reformatory at 8 30 tonight Edward Wilson of Decatur County three years for larceny Jas Moore of Marion County two years for burglary and Walter Cox of Cass County three years for larceny. The trio was assigned to scrub the kitchen floor secured three ladders and used ropes to scale the wall.

The first session of the nineteenth annual reunion of the Thirty-ninth Indiana Regiment was held in Kokomo. Of 200 survivors from a 2500-enlisted roll, 150 attended. Colonel T. J. Harrison led the regiment, with Mrs. Lulu Harrison of Chicago present. Dr Hickman gave the principal address at Grace Church.
Marshal Hatton traced the Pineville Bank robbery to Cora Parker-Hubbard and accomplices finding $25 in bills in a box buried in a pepper patch and $116 in silver in a stocking in a potato row. The raid weapon and a three hole hat were seized, with bullets signs on the revolver.
