Purcell Lynching Burned Negro Amid Mob On Main Street
In Purcell Oklahoma on August 24 a mob of about 3000 burned Peter Carter a Black man accused of attacking Mrs Minnie Spriggins. Deputy Sheriff Hayes and Under Sheriff Farris were jailed by the crowd. Carter was seized from under a boxcar and executed on a brush pile at a telephone pole as cheers rose from men and women. Mrs Spraggins survived her injuries. The town held a quiet, solemn crowd after the flames with few shots fired. Sheriff Vincent and County Attorney Franklin were away.
