Gendarmes opened fire on a mob at a pay station, firing a volley that caused fatalities. Eyewitness accounts describe panic as authorities dispersed the crowd. Investigations are underway to determine the cause and responsible parties.
At Cuevitas near Santiago de Cuba five men died and ten were wounded when Cuban soldiers rioted after only 58 of thousands awaiting pay were paid. Gen darmes clashed with crowds as United States troops protected Col. Neale and order was restored by General Castillo.
L D McElhen ny an attorney of Dayton filed suit against the Panhandle Railroad Company for 150 claiming an overcharge on a round trip ticket from Eaton to Richmond. The legal rate for 32 miles should not exceed 96 cents while a dollar was charged and paid. The statute fixes 3 cents per mile beyond eight miles. penalty equals the amount sued for.
Bir Louis H. Davies of Charlottetown Minister of Marine and Fisheries and Anglo American Commission member says he will travel to London soon. He plans talks with Joseph Chamberlain on the Alaska boundary and other Canadian issues. It is unclear if Sir Wilfrid Laurier will also go to England this fall.

He is a known burglar and bank thief, wanted at Chillicothe Ohio Indianapolis for bank robbery and other places. He was jailed in Cincinnati last December and broke jail January 14. He will be held here for burglary.
New York reports a favorable oyster season with large expected harvests. Dealers anticipate 20 to 23 million bushels, with early September shipments to Western markets in seafood cars.

Admiral Dewey and the Olympia crew near Ville Franche anticipate a New York reception. Permission to land the battalion for drill during the cruiser’s stay was granted by authorities. M Grante, Prefect of Alpes-Maritimes, voiced French government pleasure and admiration. Admiral Dewey to meet further officials tomorrow.
In Pietermaritzburg Aug 23 the premier announced steps to detect and punish British subjects cooperating with the Transvaal enemies. Reports allege Boer agents have sent secret information and even planned ambushes for British troops. Police were ordered to Colenzo over rumors of plans to destroy the railroad bridge.
At Delagoa Bay on August 23 Marques Louanzo reports that detained ammunition destined for the Transvaal has been moved to the Portuguese troopship India. Boers reportedly plan to direct commands for the ammunition.
A Birmingham firm has received an order for 14,000,000 Mauser cartridges for urgent delivery to South Africa. Secrecy surrounds the destination, but sources say the Boers use Mauser rifles in that region.
Conningham Green, the British agent and Charge d Affaires, presented a further dispatch from Mr. Chamberlain to the government. The content is not yet divulged while officials appear more cheerful after the recent pour parlour.
London August 24 reports from the Times correspondent that Natal fears are rising after a Johannesburg to Transvaal train was fired on near the border. Dutch in Natal are said to be armed with Mausers, heightening tension in the region.
Squire James Giles of Madison Township near Portsmouth Ohio died this morning. He gained national attention for a landmark lawsuit with his brother in law Walter Atkins over a McKinley pole. The pole cost under four dollars but the case cost seven thousand five hundred dollars to each side. His death leaves no legal heirs and will settle the dispute.
Robert Clemmons son of Rankin Clemmons, a Fayette County farmer, is in jail on a charge of shooting at his wife. Bond set at 500 dollars. his father will not sign. He admits firing but says the aim was to make his hard of hearing wife hear. He denies aiming at her.
A multi company deal creates a new Toronto based cycle and auto venture with 6 million dollar capital. W. B. E. Massey named president. The syndicate includes men from Massey-Harris Lozier Dunlop and Well Vale. The plan is to manufacture bicycles and automobiles in Toronto and Montford and to push out cheaper American wheels.
The gasoline schooner Magic was wrecked near Rancho Viejo Bay Santa Rosa Island with a fight among the crew. All men jumped into a skiff while an engineer and another man remained below. They urged the others to return as the skiff left. the crew later landed safely on shore and walked twenty miles to a ranch house.
The cadavers of John Landauer a cigarmaker aged 28 and Josephine Engel aged 15 were found shot through the heart in a vacant lot. Landauer carried a revolver in his right hand and a note on his body said he planned to end all his troubles. The girl had been missing from home for a week. Landauer lived with his wife and three children in the same house as the Engels and disappeared at the same time.
Columbus Board of Education voted to remove Cesar from the Latin course drawing sharp criticism from adults who recall hard Latin lessons. A business man argued the change lowers challenges and life lessons by teaching that life is not a picnic.
Potam Mexico Aug 28 A Yaqui Comisario says about 400 Indians and families camped in the Bacatete range. Joaquin Fontes says he was captured while aiding, escaped on a swift horse, and warned of large near by enemy camps. General Torres halted near Torin then moved away, rebels retreating to Vicam and other towns. Indian rafts and bow and arrow bands continue to raid horses and mules along the river.
Berlin reports General Von Boeck and General Pollack to take over as Chief of the General Staff after Count von Schlieffen retires following the autumn maneuvers.
Morehead Kentucky reports Mrs John Rawldridge wife of a prominent farmer near Slab Camp five miles east gave birth to triplets two boys and a girl yesterday evening all are healthy and recovering well.
