In Albany the crowd inside the Assembly Chamber greeted Gov. Smith’s Democratic nomination acceptance amid a steady downpour that drove many seekers indoors. Outside on the lawn thousands stood in wet clothes, cheering as the candidate spoke to radio audiences and supporters.
Republican candidate Herbert Hoover met with agricultural leaders editors and Iowa farmers to discuss his farm relief program and to hear reports from the corn belt. He toured West Branch Cedar Rapids Iowa City and Brucemore meeting Boy Scouts and farm youth along the way. Senator Nye plans support while Senator Watson and Brookhart show mixed optimism about grain prices and the campaign outlook.
Clevelanders on a motor tour through Canada were killed when their auto was struck by a Canadian Pacific train at a grade crossing near Three Rivers Quebec. Victims include George H Wise 70 Mrs George H Wise Lester A Vanderwerf and two Vanderwerf children Jack 5 and Jean 2. A sister of Mrs Wise Mary Dotty survived with serious injuries. The party departed Cleveland Saturday en route to Montreal.
Fairfield dispatch reports Lou Yeung, a Chinese cook at the Wong Gee Ranch near Fairfield, fatally slaughters ten people including Wong Gee, his wife, three children, and five Chinese workers, wounding Nellie Wong. A posse chased him. he escaped in Wong Gee’s car. Sheriff cites possible narcotics madness. tangential controls dismiss tong plot theories.
The Joint Bond Improvement Committee will meet to review a proposed $5 million bond package for a tuberculosis hospital and county home, with a resolution urging submission of $1.6 million for additions to the present hospital and deferral of the county home. Advocates note a 100 bed children's preventorium, a nurses’ home, and an expanded capacity to 600 beds. The plan aligns with support from Dr. Bachmeyer and public health leaders including Dr. Ratliff and C. M. Bookman, and echoes American Legion interest in child care facilities. The existing hospital committee is asked to continue its work.
A severe earthquake struck Khorassan province at 11 o clock injuring many and killing ten in Nishapur. Sabazawar and Shirvan also experienced strong shaking as damaged buildings were reported.
George Frey, 70, former Ashland County prosecutor, was killed when he resisted a liquor raid at his rural home six miles northeast of Ashland. Deputies Hassinger and Easterly fired as Frey menaced them with a shotgun. Wounded in the house, Joseph Hinkle was taken to Ashland hospital. Several bottles of liquor and mash were found. Coroner to hold inquest. Frey leaves a divorced wife, a son, two brothers and a sister.
Raleigh S. Hopkins the Republican nominee for governor was stabbed in the arm by John W. Jackson at a Republican State Executive Committee meeting in the State Capitol. Jackson was charged with assault with intent to commit murder and released on 250 dollar bond.
Field Marshal Viscount Allenby of Great Britain will attend and address the American Legion national convention in San Antonio on October 8 to 12 General Convention Chairman Nat M Washer announced. It will be his first visit to the United States aside from a brief Niagara Falls stop en route from Australia two years ago.
In Newburyport Massachusetts District Court Judge N N Jones lists eleven counts of illegally storing and selling gasoline and changing street levels. Mayor Andrew J Gillis receives 330 days in the House of Correction and a 1140 dollar fine after pleading not guilty. Gillis vows to appeal and blames the outcome on political enemies.
Police doggedly search Eden Park after anonymous tip claims a murdered young woman lies there. A white felt hat and a note signed Dearest Hugh link to Lon Cook 17.4% and Ruth Irish, previously Mrs Neilson, living with her brother.
Columbus Aug 22 The Democratic nominee Graham P Hunt of Cincinnati defeats Cyrus Locher by 757 votes in the August 14 primary and faces Theodore E Burton in November for the Ohio short term Senate seat. Burton wins Republican nomination by 138,780 votes over Carington T Marshal in a five corner contest.
In Salt Lake City on August 22 Marjorie Hyde, 18, hung from a third story window ledge as flames raged. She fell when her grip failed. a spectator quilt did not save her. Mother Mrs. R. R. Hyde was seriously burned while fleeing. Nearby residents escaped with injuries and others were overcome by smoke as sixty five occupants fled the burning building lacking fire escapes.
In Shelbyville Indiana on August 22 two interurban cars collided head on. Twenty three people were injured and several were in serious condition. Thomas Slater of Chicago and Irving Neal of Indianapolis, a conductor, were seriously hurt. The crash followed a switch misalignment caused by oil on the rails.
A Cincinnati wife asks a navy recruiting lieutenant for a baked beans recipe her sailor husband recalled from service. In response, the navy supplies a detailed method with three quarters pound beans one cup eats up one half cup tomatoes one teaspoon mustard one quarter cup dark molasses one half cup diced ham or bacon plus steps for soaking boiling simmering and eight hours of baking.
Governor Smith outlines a reform driven campaign touching on Prohibition Amendment modification, Volstead Act state standards, and enforcement.
