Rennes August 22 In a morning session Maitre Labori appeared to a standing ovation with applause from the audience. General Mercier and General Billot greeted him in the courtroom and Captain Dreyfus exchanged smiles. Colonel Jouaust condemned the assassination attempt on Labori as the tribunal expressed indignation. Labori thanked the court in an emotional reply.
In Gradlitz Bohemia about 15 miles east of Koniggratz serious clashes erupted between Czechs and Germans. Gendarmes guarding the municipal building faced attack and fired on the crowd. Four persons were killed and several injured before troops restored quiet.
Reports from North Carolina coastal waters say the West Indian hurricane caused heavy loss of life and property damage. Fourteen fishermen perished crossing Pamlico Sound in skiffs, four bodies have been recovered, other searches continue. Schooners Goodwyn and Aurora wrecked. L. A Hill ashore. Heswick and all hands reported lost.

CAPE TOWN August 21 Afrikander reports the Transvaal offers a five-year retrospective franchise in electing the President and seeks increased representation. The proposal suggests submitting remaining differences to arbitration.

Charles Raymond Wood of Kokomo Indiana, aboard ship for the Philippines as a recruit, has been named Second Lieutenant and will receive his assignment upon arrival in Manila. Son of G P Wood, a local manufacturer, he served in the state militia and the 168th Indiana Volunteers, after failing 15 physicals before finally passing. He then enlisted as a regular upon returning home.
Norwalk Ohio August 21 four men are charged in a brutal farm house robbery at the John Ellis farm three miles west of Plymouth. Victims include Mr and Mrs Miller aged 76 and others Mrs Ellis and Mrs White bound and terrorized while one assailant tortured Mr Miller with a heated torch. Suspects Ed Bechier James A McAvoy Patrick Elmore and William Regan arrested from Zanesville unidentified bonds set at 1000 each.
In Toledo Ohio on August 21 the centennial directors formally approved contracts with Director General D J Ryan and Assistant Director L P Harris and both have begun their duties.
