Plot to lynch innocent man exposed in Ga mob action
In Americus on August 20 Hamp Hollis a black man lynched for a double murder planned to escape with help from his wife and Eugene Reese an innocent man to be hanged instead. The motive centered on a bacon theft. Hollis murdered Mrs McGarrah and her son, bound his wife, and provoked the mob. Reese narrowly escaped hanging as officials found evidence.

Toledo Sinks After Hitting Crim Rock in Dense Fog
The British steamer Toledo bound from Galveston to Rotterdam struck Crim Rock near Sicily in a fog and sank rapidly. Eleven crew and passengers were rescued, many in night clothes, after launch of a large lifeboat. Built in Sunderland in 1882, the vessel measured 801 feet long with 28.7 feet depth of hold and carried 1 818 tons net.
