Gov. Smith, aiming at William Allen White and other critics, defends his record as an opponent of immorality in social legislation. He says the charges of supporting saloon and vice are slanderous and political, noting broad state support for him over 25 years.
Berlin reports Cecile Aussem mother accused Frau von Reznicek of hypnotism after defeats at Riviera and Breslau. Reznicek counters with defamation suit while Aussem is suspended six weeks by the Tennis Federation. The letter to the federation president preceded the confrontation and punch.
Herbert Hoover, on a Kansas train swing with running mate Senator Curtis, received strong Republican backing from Dodge City to Hutchinson. Party leaders believe Kansas will deliver a large majority in November as farmers and professionals voiced wide support for the ticket. Hoover praised Kansas farming, noting a bumper crop and attributing it to more than weather.
Paul A. Siple a nineteen year old Eagle Scout from Erie Pennsylvania was chosen to accompany the Byrd Antarctic expedition as special assistant and orderly to Commander Richard E Byrd. He topped a list of six scouts chosen from eighty eight recommended by local councils among thousands seeking the position. The selection followed an open nomination process for 17 to 20 year olds with specified qualifications.
New York prosecutors and aides briefed before a grand jury investigating social, financial, and theatre leaders in a nightclub patronage inquiry. Charles H. Tuttle, U.S. Attorney, halted wholesale subpoenas and promised alternative methods. Witnesses questioned included Philip Plant and others as the inquiry proceeds.
James A. Rowan reports Col. H. P. Fawcett, famed British explorer, was killed by Brazilian Indians as predicted in his Rio de Janeiro interview. Rowan, last reporter with Fawcett, described his 1924 expedition under Royal Geographical Society backing into Minas Gerais and Mato Grosso to find evidence of lost civilizations and human origins.
Southampton mayor Mrs. Lucia Marion Foster-Welch arrived in New York aboard the Leviathan and met Mayor James J. Walker at City Hall. She praised English leadership while noting Johnny Walker's long lineage in contrast. The party toured the city, dined with United States Lines, and planned to continue to Boston before returning.
A early morning blaze caused 15 000 to 20 000 in damage to the three story brick Masonic Building at 2249 Beechmont Avenue Mt. Washington housing Frugal Electric Company. Four firefighters were overcome by smoke as Cincinnati crews fought the flames for hours after a Masonic Lodge meeting on the third floor. Tom McGee watchman discovered the fire between the second and third floors.
Roy C. Toombs, shielded by a federal writ, came before a bankruptcy referee in Chicago to answer questions about Toombs & Daily. Springfield officials pursued extradi tion to St Louis over alleged misappropriation of securities from the International Life. Gov Small sent the extradition requisition to St Louis, while four police waited outside.
A man with a hammer assaulted 19 year old Rose Kukta and 18 year old Mary Gyetko as they walked along East Boulevard at dusk. They were left unconscious with deep scalp wounds. police arrested a suspect nearby and found a hair-stained hammer, prompting a large manhunt.
A severe tornado swept Freeborn and Mower counties in Minnesota causing at least four deaths and over twenty injuries with significant property loss including a $250,000 theater in Austin. Reports from Albert Lea and Glenville describe widespread destruction and damaged farms, while two fatalities and about a dozen cottages were ruined near Twin Lakes, Iowa, with boats hurled from the lake.
Los Angeles reports two arrest warrants issued for film star Tom Mix after Miss Midgie Miller accused him of battery at a party. Miller, injured and wearing an eyeglass bandage, claimed Morrissey was beaten. Morrissey and his wife faced inebriety charges.
Miss R Van Name a Staten Island stenographer quit her job at Albert Emanuel & Co in May to travel Europe with Capt Alfred Loewenstein aboard yachts private cars and a Fokker monoplane She returned to New York on the Cunarder Franconia seeking another office position after the financier’s dramatic career and death in an airplane crash.
Col George B Harvey 64 publicist diplomat and maker of presidents died suddenly of a heart attack at his Shallcross summer home in Dublin New Hampshire. He had recently battled asthma and had been active in Republican circles hosting leaders including William M Butler and George H Moses. He planned burial in Peacham.
Mark McNaron a 45 year old office supply salesman shot and killed his wife Annita Amaral McNaron 29 a nurse in Dr Paul S Williams office. McNaron surrendered to police and was moved from town amid an angry crowd after the crime and prior divorce and larceny warrants. Investigations target two Nashville men seen near the office and marital disputes are detailed in filed warrants and car dispute prior to the shooting.
Dr. Nicholas Murray Butler, in a New York Times letter, denounced Herbert Hoover on prohibition and armament, saying he dissociates from Hoover as a Republican. Butler favors repeal of the Eighteenth Amendment and questions the naval buildup, signaling possible shift in party alignment.
William Weisman, of 917 York Street, asks federal immigration authorities to deport his son-in-law Karl Zimmerman who married his adopted daughter Emma McMorrow. Weisman claims he took Emma from a Children’s Home nine years ago and that she is now married. officials say Zimmerman’s entry was legal and cannot be reversed.
The Near East Relief received news that a dengue fever outbreak in Athens two weeks ago has produced 190000 cases, with medical services overwhelmed and shortages in ice lemons and other supplies threatening relief efforts.
Art Goebel and Harry Tucker completed a nonstop 2700 mile cross country flight in 26 hours 58 minutes from Los Angeles to Curtiss Field. They averaged 150 mph breaking the previous record by seven hours forty two minutes with Goebel piloting the Yankee Doodle and Tucker as financer.
