The Prefecture of Police reports riots on August 20 with 380 injured, 360 hospitalized, 59 police wounded including Commissaries Gautier and Dolsmine, and 150 arrests with 80 in custody. Crowds sang the Carmagnole and 20,000 filled the boulevard at midnight.
Paris erupts in violent street actions led by Anarchists and Socialists after an appeal from journals. Faure and Faberot incite crowds at Place de la Republique while police arrest leaders, and clashes spread to Place de la Nation and churches. Twenty anarchists are captured with weapons.
In Jerome Township Delaware County residents condemn a night theft that stole and sawed off an elaborate fence Aram Macumber erected around the public school nearby burying ground. Neighbors search for the culprit and warn of severe action if caught.
Miss Sophia Layton, 25, of Coshocton Ohio, attempted to cut her throat around noon. She hid in a cellar behind boxes and was found in a nearly lifeless state. Family troubles were given as the cause. her condition may improve with recovery possible.
Ernest Barcus, 18, after a singing party disturbance, stabbed George Schmidt and his father Martin Schmidt in their dooryard. George died on the scene, Martin died later. Barcus fled across the Ohio to Clipper Mills and was captured near Bladen, Gallia County, later jailed in Pt. Pleasant, West Virginia.
Albert Anderson a 21 year old farmer was killed near Allison Nodaway County Missouri by 17 year old Thomas Downing. The two quarreled over a woman two weeks earlier and Downing struck Anderson with a rock in the road disabling him. Downing fled and a large posse hunts him. The motive centers on a woman both admired.
Cape Town reports the Transvaal has sent its reply to the British agent at Pretoria for Sir Alfred Milner. Conflicting details suggest the reply may be premature, with delays tied to Portugal’s ammunition transport issues at Delagoa Bay. Seven tons of war material landed at Port Elizabeth and moved toward Allwal, provoking Cape Colony complaints. The matter may go to the Imperial Government.
London reports the Colonial Office denies Joseph Chamberlain sent an ultimatum to the South African Republic over Uitlander demands, countering The People newspaper’s assertion from this morning.
John R. McLean will depart for Cincinnati to take charge of his campaign for the Democratic nomination for governor. He will attend the Zanesville convention and likely sit among party leaders on the platform. Deputy Sheriff Kite was killed at Lake Butler while attempting to arrest illicit distillers the Richards Brothers. After capturing one, the other two brothers fired on him wounding him fatally in the back. Kite wounded the pair but they survived.
Basil Bell a colored preacher living with white Mary Winters attacked her with an ax in a drunken frenzy. He then injured neighbor John Rumep ort accusing him of loving Miss Winters. Both victims were not expected to survive and Bell is jailed.
Special dispatch from Richmond reports Thomas S. Martin poised for reelection as U S Senator after county primary wins. Governor Tyler, his rival, contends victory is not assured as he campaigns from his mountain home amid bitter attacks. State officeholders rush to align with Martin for the coming contest.
Lieutenant Cole of the Sixth Infantry led eighty men against about one hundred insurgents in the Negros mountains. After an hour and a half of heavy fighting, the Amer icans routed the force, counting nineteen insurgent dead in the trenches. Two American wounded and three slightly injured were reported. Six rifles and reserve ammunition were seized. The snarl in Laguna Bay's cable route was repaired recently.
Dispatches from the War Department report Lieutenant Alfred W. Drew of the Twelfth Infantry killed and Lieutenant Willis Uline of the same regiment wounded in an assault near Angeles. The same dispatch notes Lt Col Sixth Infantry routing a deeper enemy position at Tibuan Negros with nineteen enemy dead and three wounded. Drew, born in Texas, graduated from West Point in 1891 and served as a Major in the Third Texas Volunteer Infantry during the Spanish-American War.
Hastings Nebraska reports Viola Horlocker held on a $1000 bond for allegedly sending poisoned candy to Mrs. Charles A. Morey in an attempt on her life. She has been placed in an insane asylum at Jacksonville Illinois. The case, once set for equity court on September 20 and then bound for December jury term, is believed to reach a conclusion amid questions of her sanity.
The Olympia officers were greeted by a large crowd at the Eden Theater with a grand reception and patriotic songs. Admiral Dewey was absent aboard ship as the Olympia prepares to depart for Villa Franca. two seamen, Matterson and Staler, were lightly injured ashore and treated before rejoining the vessel.
Eleven year old Joseph Davern, son of a Terre Haute firefighter, was killed on the Wabash River Bridge as the Knickerbocker fast passenger train approached. Two older youths escaped the edge while he lay on the ties and rose too soon, being struck by a step as the train passed. His body was recovered from the water.
In Pierre on August 20 Jennie Weston aged about 38 drowned herself and her four year old son Bertie in a cistern at the family residence. A 17 year old daughter woke to find the bodies. Family troubles are blamed as the motive with prior threats of self harm by the mother.
The Church of the Good Shepherd in Toledo Ohio burned to the ground around 6 o clock this morning. Regular services were held on the commons nearby.
The schooner Hunter Savidge capsized in a squall off Plau Barques near Beach Michigan. Five crew members drowned. Captain Sharpsteen, from Apena, led the vessel at the time of the accident.
The National Spiritual and Religious Camp Association opened its tenth annual meeting in Ashley Delaware with about 10 000 attendees. A morning conference was held and Adah S Horman MD delivered an address. Willard J Hull of Buffalo spoke in the evening and Dr Nellie Mosher presented public test demonstrations. The gathering closes next Sunday.
Intelligence from the French Sudan reports Lieutenant Klopp and Lieutenant Mounier were assassinated after being sent to command a troop column. The Figaro cites a tale that a rifle discharge ordered by Captain Voulet carried out the killings in revenge for Klopp’s role in Voulet’s recall following charges of barbarity.
In Morehead Kentucky on August 20 reliable reports describe Town Marshal Scott and his brother attempting to arrest Millard Fred Willis Thompson Bob Moody and Bill Burns from Rockville after a drunken confrontation. About fifteen shots were fired Willis Thompson was wounded Elijah Fuller a bystander was shot in the back and likely to die. Marshal Scott had bullets in his clothing.
In Fulton Kentucky on August 19 1900 Squab Bolin a Black man was hanged by a mob for highway robbery and murder tied to a gang’s spree. Henry Stewart already was lynched three weeks earlier. Bolin confessed before his death and was captured in Milan Tennessee.
Mary Smith a 72 year old spinster was found dead in her Jefferson street residence tonight. Police report she took her own life using a clothes line while suffering a mania induced by illness.
Columbus dispatch notes Nash has secured nomination and Jones plans to campaign for governor, while McLean faces a tough path amid anti Jones and anti Kilbourne campaigns.
