Haiti endured a tropical storm that swept ashore three days earlier and caused widespread ruin. Estimates say 200 dead and 10,000 homeless, with $1,000,000 in damage to roads, wires and public services. Riverside flooding and dock damage reported as relief efforts began.
The incident on Main Avenue near Courtland Avenue Norwood left Robert Kinney four fatally injured after running into the auto driven by Henry A. Wuenker. He died at Norwood Emergency Hospital from a fractured skull and broken leg as police report. A separate crash near Eastern Avenue and Tennyson Street left Walter Bradford injured when his motorcycle skidded into a parked truck owned by Red Star Milling.
The Burlington rail limited The Blackhawk en route Minneapolis to Chicago derailed after an open switch, causing the engine and two mail cars to crash through six walls of a machine shop and a rotund house in La Crosse Wisconsin. Engineer C. W. Soules, 52, died after leaping from the cab. fireman Clem Haas survived. Detectives probe tampering as the switch key vanishes.
The confession by Mrs. Lillian Lewis to save her husband from a murder sentence led to divorce proceedings in Columbus. Her testimony about relations with Leo Wade helped cause Charles H. Lewis, a former Columbus policeman, to be committed to Lima State Hospital for the Insane, and custody of their son Donald is sought. The couple married in October 1919.
Prince George youngest son of King George arrives in Quebec aboard the Empress of Australia. He is welcomed by the Lieutenant Governor of Quebec and will proceed to Vancouver to join the ship W M S Durban as interpreter with rank of full lieutenant.
Madison radio staff tracked Parker Cramer and navigator Bert Hassell as their monoplane Greater Rockford advanced from Rockford Illinois toward Greenland and Stockholm Sweden. Signals showed progress via Cochrane Ontario Rupert House Quebec and Fort George Quebec with interference complaints from Bowdin operator Don Mix citing a rival station jamming the radio link.
Bert Hassell and Parker D. Cramer departed from Cochrane Ontario in the monoplane Greater Rockford bound for Greenland after a farewell call to his wife. They received a warm send off with toasts to President Coolidge, King George, Cochrane, and Rockford as they prepared for takeoff.
New York customs guards halted and searched about 4000 visitors to the outgoing Ile de France at midnight. The spree yielded eighteen bottles of foreign liquor and involved quotes from Clause 482 allowing searches of persons believed to carry dutyable merchandise. Subpoenas to 125 alleged night club patrons were issued to testify on Broadway liquor sales before the Federal Grand Jury.
Fire near Ronald Washington destroyed 35 residences and businesses forcing miners from nearby towns to fight the blaze. High winds and dry weeks aided spread toward Roslyn and a powder warehouse, with Ron ald population about 500 and Roslyn over 3 500. Mines in the district were shut as crews battled flames from a cafe origin or liquor still explosion.
In Parry Sound Ontario two robbers halted a Canada Pacific mail car. A farmer Thomas Jackson was shot and died. Walter Laird and his brother in law Houghton Laird were wounded while pursuing the thieves who fled in a stolen US tourist car. One robber captured after exchange of gunfire.
At University of Virginia the Institute of Public Affairs closes with a debate on liquor use by the two presidential nominees. Nellie Taylor Ross, former Wyoming governor, defends Smith and the Democratic stance while noting Hoover as not a total abstainer. She says Smith does not drink and hints at limited moderation of Hoover. She asserts Smith seeks only modification of the Volstead Act, not repeal of the Eighteenth Amendment.
Topeka August 18 Senator Fess of Ohio nominated as Republican vice presidential candidate told colleagues he valued the party honor and praised Curtis. He framed the prohibition issue as a test of whether the U S will return to the saloon and stressed two party responsibility and postwar economic accomplishments.
Herbert Hoover visited Arizona and met with Republican leaders at Williams and Grand Canyon scenes to push his Boulder Canyon irrigation and hydroelectric plan. Arizona leaders hailed the plan as key to river development and party strength, tying state gains to broader Colorado River basin legislation. Stakeholders noted Democratic dominance in state government and emphasized water rights and revenue from hydro projects. Hoover planned no speeches in Arizona and prepared to head to West Branch Iowa for his next campaign stop.
Senator Curtis of Kansas urged a nonpartisan Congressional committee to tackle the agricultural problem, proposing tariff revision and inland waterways development to aid farmers. He spoke on the Kansas State House steps in Topeka, praising Hoover and urging a united front, with strong emphasis on enforcing Prohibition and the Eighteenth Amendment.
