In a tight contest the Reds beat the visiting pitcher Morrison with strong fielding by the Cincinnati squad. Sheehan delivered key relief pitching while McInnis ran slowly but contributed in defense and baserunning to seal the win.
Eppa Rixey shone for Cincinnati pitching through tenacious Pirates defense. Johnny Morrison struggled early as Sam Bohne and Pinelli plated two runs in the first. The Reds chased Pittsburgh with a trio of timely hits, while Morrison kept the Pirates at bay until late.
A Chicago gangster Louie Alterie gave 75000 dollars to aid William Darling Shepherd in defending against murder charges involving his ward William Nelson McClintock. Stewart, defense chief, says Alterie lent the money as a pure gamble with repayment if Shepherd won and loss if convicted.
Mob of six fishermen in Gravesend Bay battle a 300 pound fan shark near Coney Island. Michael Guerrieri of Manhattan Beach and five companions hauled the six foot shark aboard after it attacked the boat. A hammer and knife ended the struggle.
Two unmasked men robbed the John Forstner saloon at 33 Pike Street Covington while dozens of patrons watched. They herded victims behind a partition, searched them and took cash and valuables before fleeing in a waiting car east on Pike. Victims estimate about 200 from the till and 100 from the proprietor. The car bore Ohio plates.
Mrs May Risen brick 60 and her sister Miss Rose McNevin 62 of 3005 Durrell avenue were struck by a car on Victory boulevard while walking. Miss McNevin suffered a broken right leg and possible skull fracture. Mrs Risen Buck sustained shock and several broken ribs. Both women were taken to General Hospital in serious condition.
Casper Wyoming August 16 Efforts to prove that Walter E Simmons a Montana cowboy and former deputy who was executed at Lincoln Nebraska on Tuesday for the murder of Frank Pahl will be continued Dr B V McDermott of Glen Rock Wyoming who was interested in the defense says that if such proof is obtained it will be used in a campaign for repeal of the capital punishment law in Nebraska

Alfred Consiglio was shot and several others stabbed as fights broke out at Laurel Garden drawing dozens to headquarters for questioning.
In Sheepshead Bay a car driven by Harry Lass of Brooklyn plunged from a curb into six feet of water. Lass, 55, survived after rescue efforts. his wife Anna Lass, also 55, died after three hours of artificial respiration. Both were telegraphers at brokerage firms.
The Northwest National Bank reports recovery of more than 200000 in bonds from the December daylight heist, with 12500 remaining missing. Treasury secret agents found the bonds linked to the Weil and Head arrests, with discoveries in Chicago New York and Minneapolis. No suspects identified.
A leopard escaped from Paris Zoo and vanished in Boiss de Boulogne as thousands strolls watch. Thirty keepers and volunteers failed to locate the beast by day, with night patrols warned of potential danger and a large hunt organized.
Edward Ware 82 of 700 Freeman Ave tells police Van Hallanger 50 of 528 Richmond St shot him after a dispute at Ware’s mother’s home. Van Hallanger says Ware insulted him then fired. he returned fire, striking Ware in the chest. Ware hospitalized with poor prognosis. Van Hallanger surrendered and is held on suspicion.
Wanda Iwaska a 21 year old Polish immigrant known as Mrs Bertha Sutter ran to the roof of a four story Brooklyn house and jumped to her death after confessing to her fiancé Oriel Brannan that she had never been married and had been betrayed in youth. She left behind a five year old daughter Anna May. Brannan and his mother had welcomed her into their home and planned marriage. The church bell rung as the tragedy occurred. Brannan could not prevent her suicide and she died of a fractured skull an hour later.
Carthage Mo Aug 16 A B Cox 68 Frisco agent at Sarcoxie routed three robbers as they set to blow the safe. He fatally wounded one man later identified as Thomas Madden 45 of Louisville Ky who died at Carthage Hospital. The other two fled into a wood where a posse pursues them.
New York report states J. Frank Valentine 34, a purchasing agent, fell asleep at the wheel in the garage near his West New Brighton home. The engine ran, and hours later his father found him dead. Dr. R M Shields ruled death due to carbon monoxide poisoning.
