Senator La Follette delivers a fiery speech in the Senate denouncing Roosevelt era trusts and criticizing Taft while defending a progressive Republican stance. He warns that the party may drift and questions the Republican leadership amid the wool tariff veto dispute.
Early Sunday morning Miss Lilly Smith the English water fly will attempt a daring swim across the English Channel. She has a strong swimming record and friends believe she can complete the feat, though no woman has yet swum the channel and only two men have done so. Thirty six years passed between the two successful attempts.
Los Angeles reports that in Clarence S. Darrow's jury bribery trial District Attorney Fredericks wrapped his summing up urging conviction and jurors to dismiss sympathy. He recited 22 alleged crimes tied to the McNamara case and pressed jurors to uphold duty despite defense interruptions.
Special Dispatch to Commercial Tribune reports President Taft accusing electors who back a rival candidate of dishonesty. Speaking to the Maryland Republican Editorial Association in the White House East Room, he urged clear party loyalty and warned that those not voting for the Republican ticket should not be considered Republicans. He defended Republican principles and urged a unified fight for the party across states.
New York August 16 Lady Ross mary Levison Gower arrives on the Mauretania with the duke and duchess of Sutherland. They will stay a few days before heading to Canada. The duke says there will be no trouble over the Panama toll question as English and American relations remain friendly.
Philadelphia mayor Rudolph Blankenburg from Pocono Pines urges reversing Councilman William Burke's resignation after Burke disclosed a convict past. The council president has not opened the resignation letter, Burke's whereabouts are unknown, and his eccentric fronting at election included a police detainment after street-card distribution.
At Mouley Bouchta near Fez French troops under General Gouraud clashed with Moorish followers of the Sichtala pretender. Eight French killed and forty wounded as about three thousand Moors were routed after four hours of bayonet charges. The Pretender escaped. General Lualley ordered a temporary abandonment of Marrakesh until reinforcements arrive. European residents fled to the coast.
Mrs Mary Brennan, mother-in-law of William Burke reform councilman for the Thirty third ward, says Burke was a good son in law and kind to his wife and stepchild. Burke resigned after claiming a blackmailer threatened him and left Philadelphia seeking work, with no word since.
Bay Shore New York Aug 16 Frank Knight a chauffeur for J P Beales learns he inherited $100 000 from an uncle. Beales asks if he will leave. Knight replies he will not quit his job and plans to save the money while considering how to spend it.
President Taft approved aggressive Ohio campaign plans by Harry M. Daugherty and outlined a rule requiring Republican candidates who seek a third-party ballot line to renounce it or publicly reaffirm loyalty to the Republican ticket. Daugherty and officials defended the rule as essential to party unity.
In Springfield Ohio on August 16 the Clark County progressives split as F Snypp and C W Smith trade charges of attempts to control tomorrow’s county mass convention. Smith accuses Snypp of manipulating the meeting while Snypp is ousted by Smith though the split remains over a county ticket and possible nomination. Dr R M Hughey of Washington District D H files for the congressional progressive nomination with opposition suspected to his bid and Stewart L Tatum, a former Democrat, is discussed as a possible nominee.
Edward M. Fullington and John W. Zeller, Republican ticket hopefuls for state offices, oppose the edict by Chairman Harry M. Daugherty. The decree requires candidates who accept Progressive party endorsement to resign or renounce the Republican nomination and publicly swear loyalty to the president.
In Lebanon Ohio on August 16 local Republicans wrestle with a double endorsement for judicial candidate Willard J. Wright. He holds both regular Republican and progressive nominations for common pleas judge and faces a decision on repudiating the progressive slate to keep party support.
Colonel Roosevelt opened a Progressive campaign event in Infantry hall Providence drawing about 3000 seats filled while police contained crowds outside. He defended the movement as lasting and vowed to fight boss politics and machine rule, then spoke again at an overflow at the opera house before continuing to the Narragansett hotel for a late address.
