Governor George K. Nash told a Commercial Tribune reporter that the morning published code is an old draft with errors. He notes 5 percent gross receipts to municipalities is incorrect, that Public Service Board should be elected, and that villages and election boards are misrepresented.
Western farm families are urged to send sons to join the U S Navy with promises of steady pay from $9 to $55 monthly plus board and clothing. Recruits must be literate of good character and abide by naval terms until discharge. Recruitment tours span Ohio Michigan Indiana and surrounding states.
Bishop O Gorman delivered to President Roosevelt an autographed letter from Pope Leo XIII and a Vatican mosaic of gardens. The note, in French, lauds the US Vatican accord and cites Taft negotiations as strengthening church state ties. O Gorman listed Manila issues including church funds property division friars lands and army occupation compensation.
Indianapolis August 16 David M Parry President of the National Manufacturers Association issued a formal statement denying that he will seek the Republican nomination for Vice President.
Twenty two Fort Wayne shopmen arrived in Cheyenne claiming they were recruited to work in Milwaukee Road shops in Omaha, but say guards locked the car and kept them prisoner until Cheyenne. Officials deny kidnapping and say doors were locked to prevent striker interference. several men accepted local positions.
Hamilton, August 16. Manager F J J Sloat of the Cincinnati Dayton and Toledo Traction Company announced cars would run to Spring Grove avenue Cumminesville. Operation of the big traction cars over the Cincinnati and Northwestern was begun today.
George Hopkins leading scientist and editor of Scientific American is near death at his summer home in Adams Mass due to a sudden illness caused by uremic poisoning. His condition worsened after enjoying a quiet season at his residence. Local doctors are monitoring his status as news spreads.
