The body of George Wilson a black man was found this morning hanging from a tree in the woods near Myers in Carlisle County Kentucky. Local reports say he was married with four children and long regarded as a good citizen. Authorities note the death is a mystery though a mob is commonly believed responsible.
Hon. D. M. Massie and companions, including Mrs Massie and two young women, were held up by road agents near Mammoth Hot Springs Wyoming while returning from Alaska and Yellowstone. Six park stages were robbed, with total losses of 500 dollars. Cavalry units pursue the highwaymen.
The first stage robbery in Yellowstone National Park reported today with $500 stolen. Colonel Young informed the Interior Secretary that two men on the Sal Futura Plateau robbed the stage this morning and he requested authority to offer a reward for capture. The Interior Department stated it has no authority to offer such a reward.
Mary Batzeoun, found in a shed behind 304 Canal street, faced vagrancy charges in Police Court. Weak and bitten, she pleaded fate attacked her. she received a fine and 30 days to obtain necessary medical care.
Fred Dilcher writes from Montgomery West Virginia to predict miners will gain support and close 33 mines on Sewell to Loup Creek area. He notes operators on the K and M Railway block coal movement from New River to Gauley Bridge and mislead Ohio buyers about mine activity. He expects mines to shut Wednesday or Thursday as the strike widens.
In Steubenville Ohio on August 14 a boy named Daw son, eight years old, fell from the Success at the wharf while fishing. His two companions fled in fright and did not report the drowning until morning. The boy’s parents searched the city all night believing him lost.
A Huntington dispatch reports Hatfield and his men held at Devil's Backbone fortress on Tug River were bombarded with dynamite by Sheriff Keadie and deputies. Several possemen wounded. Hatfield and companions escaped amid rock and tree debris. Hatfield may be captured within twenty four hours but remains free.
In Wheeling West Virginia on August 14 officials report no knowledge of any Hatfield fortress explosion and regard the claim as a hoax or fake report from the area.
Indianapolis August 14 Mrs Christian Schrader wife of a leading glass and Queensware merchant collapsed during her friend Freida Paetz funeral yesterday and died today from apoplexy despite efforts of several physicians at the grave.
The jury convicted Dugan of murder and sentenced him to twenty one years in the penitentiary. A motion for a new trial was filed alleging sheriff drunkenness and outside juror contact. The court refused the new trial and the case will proceed to the Court of Appeals. Colson supporters left for Middlesboro tonight.
Zellen D. Robinson and Miss Isa A. Coogie of Arnettsville Marion County eloped to Oakland Maryland to marry during a thirty minute wait on a train. A license was secured and a minister performed the ceremony in the depot waiting room.
Chicago August 14 A musician and piano tuner H W Harrington lost both cork legs above the knees in a saloon he unscrewed and offered as security for drinks. In Judge Fosters court policemen rewired his fate and Harrington promised to walk straight in the future.
In Hicksville Ohio on August 14 a dispute among women over their children led to Mrs. Gilbert scalding the neighbor child with hot water after the child plucked flowers. The child was taken to a hospital in critical condition and Mrs. Gilbert was arrested.
Detectives and revenue officers raided a frame house on Twenty six th place and uncovered an illicit distillery capable of producing fifty two gallons of moonshine daily. Proprietors Samuel Marlow and his son, both described as Prussian Jewish, were taken into custody amid several other similar setups in central Chicago with more arrests expected.
Mrs Emily Brown of Douglas Michigan in a deposition filed today testifies that as far as she knows her daughter Sarah Ann Angell was never married to Jay Gould
A party of six Klondike returnees reached Chicago with about 60 000 dollars each. A. D. Grey, 22, from Wisconsin, estimates Klondike wealth at 300 000 cash value, likely to reach a million when worked. He endured a harsh winter, surviving on beans and pop corn, and claimed six rich claims on Eldorado Creek.
Edward Showers a mulatto 2 shot and killed Jane Thomas his sweetheart at banker Grimes residence where she worked as a domestic. He fired from behind then chased her into the parlor where she fired the fatal shot. She was struck by five bullets. A lynching may follow.
Middlesboro Ky Aug 14 four of Clark's parade men tied to the killing of Bill Miller were captured three released while W M Clark was held. J C Clark who killed Miller remains at large.
The Chicago Oil Company hit oil at the Mair farm on the Hendershot field near Marietta Ohio. Oil reached the tank in fifteen minutes with sixty barrels produced and daily capacity estimated at 800. The site lies beyond the already developed field.
United States Senator J. Z. George died at 2 40 PM in Mississippi City aged 71. Pink George his Carrollton son rushed to his bedside while a telegram indicated the father sinking. A committee of Senators may go to the funeral with Vice President Hobart to decide.
Dr E M Wiley of Harrodsburg will succeed Dr Scott as Superintendent of the Lexington Asylum with Dr John Long of Louisville as assistant physician. Wiley is a National Democrat and Long a Republican. Announcement expected at the Governor's office Monday. Wells of Harrison County is said to have declined the offer.
Colorado Springs Aug 14. W B Felts will attempt to fly tomorrow between two large aero planes he made from the summit of Pike's Peak. Weather has hindered the plan all week and conditions have not been favorable.
