Dr Fridtjof Nansen describes the Fram’s voyage through ice off Siberia, drift toward the north, record high latitude of 83 degrees 69 minutes north, and the decision to abandon ship for exploration with Lt Johnson. He notes extreme cold, ice pressure, and preparations for possible loss of the Fram.
The account follows a trek from April to August as the party battles severe cracks in the Arctic seas and dwindling provisions. With only two dogs left they hunt seals and bears to survive while mapping a route toward land near 81 38 north. They eventually sight land on August 6 and discover ice capped islands, continuing westward by kayak through open water.
In Parkerburg West Virginia Aug 14 Hocking Valley Railroad paid workers with loose silver coin as a gag if free silver won. Men tried to handle the money from the pay car using hats caps and newspapers. One worker received seven dollars in quarters and halves and the haul overflowed his hat. The scene drew laughter as coins spilled on the grass while recipients counted them.
Indianapolis Aug 14 The Republican National Democrats and Populists consider a fusion ticket in Alabama Texas and Florida to unite against Bryan and Sewall. Populists resist Dem fusion in these states citing strength of combined anti Bryan vote and a tested colored Republican bloc. Executive Committee to meet in Chicago to decide paths as California and South Dakota delegate elections loom and convention week HQ is arranged.
The body of a woman was found near Twelve Mile Creek just below New Richmond at 9 o clock. The body likely lay there ten days. Two dogs brought in a hand and a scalp. The woman is described as medium height with light brown hair wearing a black dress stockings and shoes. A valise umbrella and veil were found nearby. Cause of death unknown.
In Indianapolis on Hast Washington street Bessie Swain aged seventeen fed a fatal dose of morphine after seeing William Carbaugh with another woman. The tragedy occurred last night in her room reflecting a jealous motive.
At a trustees meeting in Columbus Dr J A Burgoyne was elected physician of the Deaf and Dumb Institution. Dr Lippett, who has served as physician for four years, resigned.
In Crawfordsville Indiana on August 14 thieves entered the residence of Capt J R Pence and family while they were away and stripped the house of about 1000 dollars in contents.
In Columbus Ohio a large Republican campaign tent opens with Gov Bushnell presiding. Speakers include Senator Sherman and Senator Foraker with Woodford and Jones set for afternoon and evening remarks. Delegations from Bowling Green Wood County and many counties expected to attend.
G E Bentley, presidential nominee of the National party and silver wing of Prohibition, arrives in Indianapolis after addressing Marion Indiana. He is met by a reception committee at the Ribbon House where Prohibitionists call upon him. Bentley says the Pittsburg split was driven more by a bid to strike women from the platform than by free silver.
Richard T. Crane, president of the Crane Elevator Company, addressed 1,500 employees at the South Jefferson street works on finance. He will repeat the speech next Monday at the Judson street works amid enthusiasm and strong gold sentiment among workers.
An employee noted strong labor support for McKinley and the gold standard, while recognizing agitators who favor Bryan and socialist views. The worker said Crane's spoken argument carried more weight than any printed version would.
In New Haven on August 14 the silver standard Democrats reveal plans for a special meeting to appoint a new State Committee. They foresee two sets of primaries to select delegates, aiming to seat most of their delegates at the State Convention and to control it.
In Xenia Ohio on August 14 a circular from the Miami Powder Company Gee's Station urged employees to back McKinley and sound money. The note, signed by President A O Fay and Superintendent L M Garfield, warns of dire consequences from free silver adoption.
In Germantown Philadelphia a Republican campaign kickoff drew several thousand voters. Speeches were delivered by ex-Postmaster General John Wanamaker Mayor Warwick and Theodore Justice. Justice spoke on tariffs and their impact on laborers. Wanamaker touted a sound currency.
Congressman David K. Watson of the Twelfth District and Republican nominee agrees to a series of joint debates with Democratic free silver nominee John J. Lentz. Times places and arrangements to be announced later.
In Marion Ohio August 14 an 80 year old woman Mrs Becker living with her children fourteen miles from the city was attacked while attempting to free a pig stuck in a fence. She sustained severe lacerations and died before help arrived.
In Cleveland Aug 14 three men were shot and one badly hurt as Brown Company strikers clashed with non union workers leaving the works. Wounded include J W Caldwell and George Plumb non union and Thomas Evans striker. Police arrested striker J H Whitlan after he threw a revolver into a barber shop.
David Thompson, a contractor, was hanged to a tree by workmen owed wages near Cross Forks. Though cut down, his condition is doubtful as a foreman intervened and forced the mob to release him. The incident follows Thompson's failure to pay workers promised wages.
In Georgetown Ohio on August 14 a rumor spread that Mrs. Mary Driver near Mt. Oreb confessed on her deathbed to killing her imbecile son with her own son George Driver seven years ago. The body was said hidden in an old neglected well on the family farm. A search party forms to verify the allegation.
Miss Cora Lee a 37 year old domestic in Harvey G Hower’s family drowned while bathing at the Tuscarawas Reservoir where the Howers keep a summer home. She appeared to faint or become ill, body found in three feet of water about fifteen feet from the bank in front of the house.

The America Line steamer St Paul, sailing from Southampton, reached Sandy Hook at 9 12 A M after a six day thirty one minute voyage. It beat the sister ship St Louis by six days two hours and twenty four minutes to set a new record previously held by the St Paul.
Thieves burglarized the Bonnell residence and drug store in Hubbard six miles north of Youngstown, stealing $400 in jewelry and medals. No description or evidence of the burglars is available.
A man in Cleveland on the Cuyahoga line was struck by a train as he walked along the track today. The pedestrian did not hear the approaching train and was fatally injured near a sharp curve in Akron.
