Night session ends after daylong debate as Senate votes 36 to 20 for a flexible tariff allowing presidential rate changes through July 1, 1924 with limits. An amendment requires Congressional approval after July 1, 1912 and public hearings on tariff recommendations.
The Mauretania arrived in New York in 5 days 9 hours 20 minutes from Cherbourg, beating the previous record by ten minutes. She carried 7 813 bags of parcels post, the largest mail shipment in a single voyage, with mail largely redirected from the Olympic after a stern post damage.
At Ft Scott Kansas a field of watermelons is lit by electric bulbs strung from wires tied to Arcadia lighting plant. Owner J P Walker camps in a wagon at the center to guard the crop from theft and keep watch overnight.
Mrs. Virginia Cherrington 52 widow of a notable Ashland attorney was arrested by Crim Ryan detectives for stealing merchandise from a department store. She later admitted thefts including baby shoes toys and medicated gauze from two other shops and a drug store. She posted a $900 bond via Otto Dahm.
The City Planning Commission rescinded its mall proposal between Court Street and the Rapid Transit Boulevard and Main and Walnut Streets after a tense meeting. Officials cited city finances and the high land costs as reasons to drop the plan. Executive Secretary and engineer C C Meeds was named, while Fred Schneller was thanked for four years of service. several garage and gasoline station recommendations were approved or disapproved. Technical Advisory Corporation representatives noted they would survey the city on foot to study planning problems.
Albert Ackles a 52 year old Lockland contractor fatally shot himself after firing a shotgun at his granddaughter Ruth Van Hedt 15 who fled his home on the evening of the incident. Ruth was wounded in the hip but is not believed to be seriously injured. A note in Ackles pocket identified debts and legacies for relatives.
Dublin reports say National forces entered Cork on Thursday to an enthusiastic reception. Seven troopers killed and many wounded. irregulars blamed for killings and fires. Post Office and Customs House seized as Cork burns with two million pounds in damage. Clerks and fire brigade respond amid ongoing clashes.
The steam yacht Crusader carrying Governor Miller Adolph S. Ochs publisher of the New York Times and Charles J. Peabody caught fire four miles north of Lake George village. Passengers wore life preservers and were later driven by automobile to their destination after the crew extinguished the blaze.
Paris dispatch reports David Lloyd George proposed submitting disagreements on a German moratorium to the League of Nations arbitration. London Finance Ministers and experts back seven British note points. three others cover money control, forests, an international loan, and a 26 percent export tax to be discussed next day. French circles deny League involvement in moratorium divergencies.
Five people are jailed for the murder of Ronnie D Hodell a wealthy Newaygo County farmer in White Cloud Michigan. Hodell's widow Meda Hodell is also charged with killing her father in law David Hodell. Confessions spoken by Mrs Hodell her mother and brothers Lee and Herman Dudgeon followed arraignment. A farm hand Robert Bennett denied guilt and was not arraigned.
Charles M. Schwab announced from Indianapolis that he will take personal interest in running the Stutz Motor Car Company of America Inc. He and associates recently bought the company from Guaranty Trust. Current officers stay, and price cuts take effect immediately.
In Minneapolis on August 11 a $5,000 diamond bar pin owned by Mrs. John Stratton O Leary wife of a New York City Public Safety Commissioner disappeared. Police were asked to help recover it.
Walter G. Whiffen AP Bureau Chief in Peking says there is no chop suey in China and that there never has been such a dish there. He has sampled American chop suey and contemplates introducing it in Beijing.
White House spokesman said the anthracite coal situation would climax in less than a week and a settlement is possible without obstruction. President Harding praised the operators as the best scouts faced with the dispute and noted bituminous talks delay the anthracite talks. Secretary Davis warned of a nationwide coal shortage with 30 million tons lacking and only a future April surplus foreseen. Central Coal Committee may deny priority orders to noncompliant mines as Hoover fair price rules guide production.
In St Louis the Association of St Louis Democrats voted to bolt Reed and back an independent candidate. Len Stephens chairs the group which labeled Reed a Republican. The Missouri Women Opposed to Reed also oppose him. Breckinridge Long distances himself from the independent bid. Despite tensions, many Missouri Democrats back Reed after the primary, and St Louis city committee pledges support.
After hours of closed talks, chief railroad labor officials delayed response to President Harding’s shopmen offer and pledged to reveal unified policy tomorrow. They warned of possible walkouts at terminals and stressed the fight extends beyond shopmen to all railroad unions.
An explosion and fire destroyed the converted yacht Sharon three miles off Miami Beach after it left for Nassau. Five people died including Chief Engineer Marion Carriott and steward Mike Plakins. two others are missing. Gasoline fueled the blaze as survivors fled, and the wreck sank within an hour.
Louisville & Nashville engineers on the Henderson St Louis Division vote to remain off duty until equipment is repaired and guards removed. After a four hour meeting the move follows the firemen staying away and trains Friday were pulled by traveling engineers and firemen. A complete tieup of the two divisions out of Evansville is likely.
W G Lee president of the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen telegraphed the Santa Fe Coast Line leaders in Los Angeles that the Santa Fe walkout was unauthorized and that standard dispute procedures must be followed before any work suspension.
Chicago August 11 officials of the Atchison Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad received a telegram from W G Lee head of the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen stating he advised workers who left Western lines to return to duty and that the suspension was unauthorized.
Los Angeles reports that members of the Brotherhood of Railway Clerks on the Santa Fe Coast Lines have walked out at Prescott Arizona over hazardous working conditions. The strike was authorized in a telegram from H P Matthews General Coast Lines Chairman to Los Angeles officials.
San Francisco August 11 The Associated Press reports the Santa Fe System faces paralysis across the Western territory as officials confront a grave prospect threatening operations statewide and prompting urgent action.
Los Angeles reports the Santa Fe strike by railroad shopmen spreads to include the Big Four engineers firemen conductors and brakemen causing major passenger service disruption and freight delays. Twelve transcontinental trains marooned passengers 2200 to 2500. mail moves shifted to boat and motor. perishable freight embargoed. stage lines drop reservations to cope.
148 American railways head officials meet at Grand Central and agree to back President Harding's second proposal. They say strikers should be rehired as needed to restore normal shop force levels and that seniority decisions may be settled later by the Railroad Labor Board. The statement stresses loyalty to existing commitments and the aim to satisfy both the president and the country.
