Russian forces resisted a major German attack on the Eastern Front and halted the latest thrust near Brody, demonstrating enduring strength in the face of push by German forces.
British and French forces push German lines back in Flanders with gains in the Westhoek area. Haig reports nocturnal advances on the right flank while German counterattacks fail to hold. French troops recapture ground near St Quentin and Ailles while noting limited German success on the Aisne front.
Washington August 11 Renewed emphasis by Provost Marshal General Crowder on the army draft law shows lines are drawn tight for exemptions. Married men are exempted only when the government benefits, and industrial exemptions require proof an business is indispensable to public interest or military needs.
A U S submarine collided with the Nantasket Beach steamer Mayflower in thick fog in Boston Harbor. The Mayflower sustained a hole in its port side and one sailor was injured. 1500 passengers evacuated to the Rose Standish. The submarine returned to the navy yard with a stove bow but minor damage.
Pacifists in Glasgow rallied against authorities ban on the Workers' and Soldiers' Council conference. James Ramsay MacDonald addressed the crowd, defending the labor movement and urging a peace at a democratic price to end Europe’s war. Lloyd George announced Arthur Henderson's resignation from the War Cabinet following Labor party actions to send delegates to Stockholm.
The Supreme Court will hear a test of the conscription act's constitutionality by August 24 on a writ of error from Northern Ohio. Charles Ruthenberg Alfred Wagenknecht and Charles Baker, all Socialist officials, were convicted of conspiring to induce evasion and sentenced to one year in Canton Workhouse.
New York August 11 A third arrest in the alleged conspiracy to evade the selective draft law was made with Kalman Gruber a laboratory dentist jailed after being taken to the United States Attorney's office and Tombs Prison. Louis I Cherry and Dr S J Bernfeld earlier were arrested and jailed. Gruber admitted supplying exemption blanks and claimed conversations with Cherry and Bernfeld.
Cleveland to Montreal and Winnipeg report mild temperatures with little change through Monday. Cincinnati notes August 11 1917 data with highs around 82 and lows near 50 plus light precipitation and cloudy conditions.
The Rome rumor of a secret tunnel from the Villa of the Roses to the Hotel Eden is dismissed as baseless after investigation. Officials say no underground passage exists, ending days of sensational speculation about confidential meetings with Prince von Buelow, former German ambassador.
Mexican officers uncover what appears to be a German forward station at Lobos Island lighthouse off the northeast Mexican coast near Tuxpam. Authorities believe it could have been converted into a submarine or naval base if not discovered.

Frisco and Lexington dispatches report a large scale strike as 8 000 to 10 000 miners laid down tools in Kentucky and 10 000 in Frisco area. Union seeks recognition and new wage scale while most miners join the action with a few mines already agreeing to terms. No disorder reported so far.
The National Council of Defense urges Ohio and other states to study a Wisconsin plan allowing county road crews to be requisitioned for haying, thrashing, and other farm tasks during labor shortages. Officials note county adaptations and equal access to labor, with caution against favoritism.
In New York on August 11 a stoppage by more than 900 longshoremen and freight handlers of the Southern Pacific Steamship Company ended after a conference between company officials and worker representatives. London August 11 King George telegraphs to Russia's Prime Minister Kerensky pledging continued British effort against common enemies. He says united Allied force will secure an honorable peace and world liberty and has faith in Russia to endure its trial.
The Shipbuilding Board will ask Congress for another 500 million dollars for shipbuilding next week. Contracts already let have consumed all prior war budget funds, with 250 million intended for commandeering ships. The Emergency Fleet Corporation approved about 200 thousand tons of ships at a cost of 25 million dollars, in contracts signed after leadership changes.
Victor Adler, leader of the German Socialists in Austria, is dangerously ill according to advices from Vienna. He is the father of Dr. Friedrich Adler who killed Austrian Premier Count Karl Sturgkh in October 1916. Adler supported the Austrian government since the war began.
