A Columbus dispatch details Democratic distress as Populists reject fusion appeals. The Ohio Populists, led by Rankin and McLean forces, purge fusionists, nominate a pure Populist state ticket, and endure a rough convention including a fight and charged accusations of corruption.
Ellis Penroy escaped from an asylum and attacked a farmhouse three miles south of Dublin Indiana. He forced the family to flee then shot Charles Henby in the eye and stood guard outside the house until Cox escaped. Bloodhounds are on his trail as Penroy remains at large.
In SarahsvIlle Caldwell County Mayor John Mercer was found at rear of Dr Spriggs residence by the owner. Spriggs fired a shotgun wound to Mercer's head, likely fatal. Spriggs is brother of John P Spriggs Woodsford Democratic nominee for Supreme Judge of Ohio and is not yet arrested.
The American Line steamer St Paul arrived at Southampton today after crossing from New York in 6 days 13 hours 37 minutes, shaving about 45 minutes from its own eastward record. The best eastward mark remains the Furst Bismarck at 6 days 10 hours 55 minutes set in September 1893.
A Gerry Society agent in New York caused the arrest of Maria Rosa of Newark for street begging aided by 13 year old Lena Mc Gowan. After warning the sister, both were taken to the society rooms, cautioned, and released on condition she return to Newark. The magistrate discharged her after she pledged to go back.
Laura M. Clemmer 52 is found dead with two bullet holes in her head at her home in West Alexandria Eaton Ohio. A 22 caliber revolver with empty chambers lies beside her as family notes mental strain since her mother's death and a rumored romance from decades ago. The incident sparks speculation it may influence a new Frantz trial appeal though experts say selfinflicted double head shots are unlikely.
Bellefontaine Ohio August 11 1890 Mr David Detrick 74 and wife 72 wealthy respected country people were found murdered at their home. Bodies lay three days. Robbers ransacked the house and a $150 found in a flour bin. Special detectives with bloodhounds on the scene.
The injunction blocking the sale of the American Glucose Company to the new glucose combination was dissolved this afternoon in Peoria Illinois. A certified check over 2 million dollars was exchanged to complete the transfer and prevent further complications.
John L. Fulmer of Butler Indiana returned from Alaska where he had filed six claims and sold two rich claims to an Eastern company for sixty thousand dollars. Fulmer, with Chicago capitalists, plans to return in about ten days.
Mrs Sarah Thompson of Delaware Ohio says her name was used without authority in connection with the New York Klondike syndicate. She disclaims any relation with the group financially or otherwise though a relative who is a patroness and a member of the New York Press Club is connected.
Loudsville August meeting of the Republican State Central Committee selected K. J. Hampton Winchester W. J. Davidson Pulaski County R. L. Gwathmey Jefferson County N. B. Chambers Hancock County C. O. Reynolds Lexington to form the executive panel. Hampton likely to be chairman with Gwathmey as secretary and headquarters in Louisville.
Mrs. Fred Kallenbough of Silver Creek Clark County died after a wagon team ran away one mile north of Underwood. She was thrown beneath the wheels and, though horribly wounded, walked a mile before dying eight hours later. Her husband escaped unharmed.
Reports say a Norfolk and Western train was nearly wrecked near Lucasville when fence rails and ties were fastened to the track. This marks the third attempted derailment in as many weeks between Lucasville and Waverly, spotted by a track walker in time to avert disaster.
A $2 000 damage suit was filed in the Court of Common Pleas by Elihu Clark against Chesley Clark of Delaware Ohio. Clark claims Chesley Clark promised lifelong board for 300 cattle surrendered to his son but refused to honor the agreement.
In Blountville Sullivan County Miss Rowena Ross Collins eloped with Milton McCary her brother in law after a joyful early marriage. Ambrose Collins, the husband, found their home deserted with a banjo bearing a lock of hair and a note expressing she hoped to meet her husband in heaven. Authorities seek the missing wife.
Mrs Eliza Walton aged 80 was abducted from the home of her son in law Milton Nay three miles east of Lebanon Indiana. Her son Thomas Walton drove her into the woods but Nay and his wife blocked the road and held her prisoner for four hours before Marshal Witt took Walton into custody. The old lady who receives a 24 dollar monthly pension will decide tomorrow who will live with her.
Governor Bushnell plans a two week absence starting tomorrow to New Hampshire for a rest in the White Mountains. He aims to return in good health to resume official duties and the fall campaign.
Martin Hardesty was arrested in Circleville Ohio on an arrest warrant sworn by his wife. She accuses him of killing her son James Smith after a July 27 dispute. The missing 20 year old son had an altercation with his stepfather and disappeared.
Evansville Ind Aug 11 Mrs Orion Yarborough stepped on a lit match at home and her clothing caught fire. She ran screaming and before help arrived she was badly burned with her life despaired of.
The Secretary of War orders a cavalry detail to help U S Indian Agent Wisdom remove twenty eight intruding families from the Cherokee Nation, Muskogee district, dated August 11.
Chicago Aug 11 Trustees of the University of Illinois decide to open the College of Physicians to women after a bitter battle against the change. The move follows a long standing push to admit female students to medical training despite opposition from many faculty and supporters.
Columbus will host the National Convention of Mayors on August 28 29 and 30 and October 1. The gathering called by City Government magazine will discuss municipal government topics including water gas electric lighting street improvements taxation franchises and city government forms. Over 200 delegates are expected to attend. It will be the first national convention of its kind in history.
Special dispatch reports David E Bates arraigned before Justice Moore on two counts of bigamy. Two of his wives Nettie Swaim and Julia Mey attended, Ida Calderwood of Galena appeared with a third warrant. Bates’ daughter played in court while Mrs Bates struck him. he was held on bail and slated for a dime museum appearance next week.
Alvin Bowling was found shot about two miles from Morhead Kentucky around 2 PM. J Nichols discovered the body while hunting his hogs. Bowling had recently been released from state prison after serving a term and had left his wife distressed by his absence days earlier.
W L Meese of Ligonier Indiana plans 1200 incorporators for the W L Meese Marriage Association to promote wedlock with a vow against discouraging marriage A reunion for the 1200 couples is set for Auburn on August 19 expected to draw about 5000 people The founder aims for 5000 members before his death noting no divorces among couples he married.
A Russian wife arrives in Cleveland seeking her husband Louis Veosdovitch and learns he already married Fannie Rosen in Cleveland months earlier. She travels with their 4 year old, had been left in Russia five years, and tracked him from New York to Ohio. Veosdovitch was last known in Uhrichsville running a junk shop.

News from San Francisco reports the Empress of Japan completed the Vancouver to Yokohama crossing in ten days three hours and thirty nine minutes, beating the previous best held by the China. The voyage covered 4,270 knots, establishing a new fast-transit record.

Charles Madison of Richmond, a lineal Madison descendant and brother of murdered Lillian Madison, died by his own hand on eastbound Chesapeake and Ohio Train No. 4 near Williamsburg. He was intoxicated, found with a pawn ticket for a watch and a pencil note to a sweetheart. No motive known. Remains moved to Newport News then Richmond.
A Buncombe County mob seized Bob Brachett from Asheville Jail and hanged him near Weaverville after a prior failed attempt to shoot. The victim, Miss Henderson, was present and reportedly shouted for joy as Brachett was swung aloft.
Prince Henry of Orleans returns from Abyssinia to Marseille where his seconds M. Leon tieff and M. Raoul Mourachon will meet with General Albertone's envoy in Paris to arrange a duel over accusations about Italian conduct in Abyssinia.
