In Cleveland Philip Corry a noted gang figure was shot after leaving a pool hall in the Roaring Third Precinct. Detectives pursued the killer and his wife a fellow dope peddler. In Indianapolis Terrence King a rum runner was killed at Green Mill Gardens as two female witnesses are detained. A notebook in Kings pocket lists numerous bootleggers and federal agents.
Five persons drowned in Grindstone Lake near Sandstone Minnesota when they stepped into a 185 foot deep pool. Mrs Charles Lindeen and her father William Lundholm died while attempting to rescue Mrs Lindeens children Irene 14 and Hillard 10. They lived at Cloquet.
Five hundred whales were killed yesterday off Westmann Haven in the Faroe Islands as a large pod approached, with every available craft from the islands pressed into service for the hunt. The incident occurred in the North Sea and was reported from Copenhagen.
Mrs Helen Marshall wife of Minian Marshall vice president of National City Bank hanged herself in their seven floor Riverside Drive nine room apartment. Ill health and melancholia noted in a farewell letter to her husband and she asked forgiveness. The couple’s home was not opened to reporters and the note cited her husband as “the best man in the world.”
Five elephants escaped from a circus in Lewiston Idaho causing widespread damage and panic. One elephant was shot dead by Mayor R B G Braddock after the animals charged through streets and a downtown garage trap ended the spree. Four others were captured and returned to the circus grounds.
Mme Alfred Loewenstein, widow of the Belgian financier killed after his plane went down over the English Channel, refused to comment on reports of an estate worth £8,000,000 after £12,000,000 losses in the three weeks before his death. She also declined to discuss her husband’s will or future plans while staying in a London hotel. The Evening News asserted the estate would be shared equally with his son.
Florida endures damage from a first hurricane as a second disturbance forms in the West Indies. Warnings issued for Jamaica and Haiti as winds rise in Santo Domingo and Haiti. Two stockholders Massey Wilson and C P Long filed to have Roy C Toombs account for three and a half million dollars in missing securities. They seek an injunction to block reinsurance with Missouri State Life and to stop a Monday stockholders meeting for a reorganization. They demand restoration of assets as eight state insurance commissioners probe the company.

Judge Charles V Hoffman curtailed his vacation after 16 year old Paul Grutzmacher fled the Boys Industrial School in Lancaster Ohio. Grutzmacher, involved in a series of robberies and declared a gang member, remains at large while Hoffman vows stricter housing for incorrigible juvenile thieves.
Judge Stanley Struble of the Common Pleas Court analyzes the County Manager proposal in Ohio. He states uniform county government is required by the constitution and the manager form cannot function without amendments across all eighty eight counties.
William V. Dwyer, once linking to the Cincinnati Coney Island race track, had his two year federal sentence in Atlanta lifted by Attorney General Sargent on August 9 after paying a $10,000 fine or proving good conduct. He and E C Cochran faced two year terms. the case tied to a large rum syndicate moving liquor via an eighteen ship fleet with Coast Guard links.
Arthur Hamilton Vail 45, manager for Halsey, Stuart & Co. Philadelphia, died after plunging from the 14th floor of the Packard Building. He arrived moments before and was blocked by a ground glass partition. His hat remained on his head as he fell, striking a skylight in a clothing store and shocking workers. Vail, a Wisner Nebraska native, studied at the University of Chicago and Harvard before moving to Philadelphia.
William E. Hickman was ordered hanged at San Quentin on October 19 for the murder of Marian Parker, after Judge Douglas Edmonds overruled nine defense objections. The case concerns the kidnapping and killing of the twelve year old girl in Los Angeles.
John Miller twenty was in serious condition at a Cleveland hospital after a July twenty four slap on the back by fellow worker Andrew Pusharick led to a broken neck. Pusharick was arrested on an assault charge as Miller had little chance for recovery.

OSSINING N Y Aug 9 Three men were put to death in the electric chair at Sing Sing Prison tonight Daniel Graham a New York policeman who robbed and killed a paymaster he was assigned to guard George Appel who shot a police Lieutenant who tried to arrest him and Alexander Kalinowski a convict at Auburn Prison who stabbed a keeper in an argument over prison rations Graham and Appel protested their innocence to the last Kalinowski went to death admitting the crime for which he was convicted. Graham was convicted last November of killing Judson Pratt a construction paymaster. Last month Appel sought to assume the blame for Pratts death but Judge Koenig said Appels statement failed to convince him. Appel a former Chicago gunman was convicted last December of killing Police Lieutenant Charles Kemmer in a Brooklyn hold up. Kalinowski was convicted of stabbing to death James Durkin principal keeper at Auburn Prison because he didnt get enough to eat.
Joseph Wessels, 36, of Price Hill, died from a fractured skull after Howard Hartshorn, 34, struck him with a bottle upon discovering Wessels with Hartshorn’s wife, Mrs. Margaret Hartshorn. Hartshorn is charged with manslaughter. Mrs. Hartshorn is held as a material witness.

Sir Gilbert Clayton's talks at Jeddah failed, with a Baghdad dispatch hinting at precautions on the Irak frontier. The Rev John Roach Straton released a letter to Gov Alfred E Smith accepting his challenge to repeat on Smith's presence and prove a Sunday sermon claim that Smith as a public man is the deadliest foe of moral progress.
