In Chicago on August 9, the Democratic presidential candidate and his wife attended services at the Englewood Presbyterian Church unaware of many in the congregation. After church they planned for Madison Square Garden events, while Bryans visited Clifton House for a morning interview and portrait.
Special dispatch reports Henry H. Benadum, a Lancaster saloon keeper, shot at by an assailant who followed a wife visitation. Frank G. Clover, a Columbus marble dealer’s solicitor, was wounded by a twenty two caliber bullet. Clover’s horse was hit and likely to die. Clover is married.
Tom Brown, a Webster County farmer, in a frenzy attacked his wife, child, and mother-in-law with an axe-handle near Dixon. He killed the two women and believed his wife would recover from injuries. He was adjudged insane at an examining trial and confined to Western Lunatic Asylum in Hopkinsville.
London August 9 report notes English public interest in the upcoming U S presidential race with Daily News interviews and contrasting views. It cites Moreton Frewen predicting Bryan and another banker foreseeing McKinley’s decisive victory as a tale of two opinions on American politics.
Special Dispatch to Commercial Tribe reports Charles Porter and Frita Kreckel arrested in Indianapolis on suspicions of multiple daylight robberies. Chisels found matched marks on doors of homes left unoccupied by summer travelers. Porter claims residence at Eighth and Race streets in Cincinnati.

Special Dispatch from Lawrenceburg Indiana describes a tramp named Joseph McCartey who fell from a fast freight on the B and O G W railroad at West Lawrenceburg sustaining head cuts and bruises. He rose covered in dirt after a rough tumble and lamented the loss of a bottle of whisky more than his injuries.
Lawrenceburg Indiana reports Ed ward Heaton a game chicken raiser found yesterday in a coop nest an egg measuring 6 1 2 by 7 1 2 inches with a rattling sound when shaken. Heaton cracked it revealing another egg the size of a normal egg with a hard shell each containing yolk and white a curious double egg prior unseen in poultry records.
The Pacific Coast Steamship Company's steamer St Paul ran ashore at Point Pinos early this morning near Monterey. About fifty passengers were aboard but all were safely landed. A rescue steamer Rosa departed San Francisco to assist and tow the wrecked vessel remains uncertain.

William J. Gilmore aged 73 former Ohio Supreme Court Judge died at his Columbus home. He served 1874 to 1880 after earlier roles as Prosecuting Attorney and Common Pleas Judge in Preble County. A trustee of Miami University and leader of the Ohio Bar, he leaves son C R Gilmore. Funeral set for tomorrow and Tuesday in Columbus.
In Hahnville Louisiana a mob seized three Italian men from the jail and hanged them from a shed near the courthouse. Lorenzo Saladino allegedly murdered Jules Gueymard at Freetown while Deceino Sorcero and Angelo Marcuso killed an old Spaniard on the Ashton Plantation near Boutte Station. Local sheriff had previously guarded Saladino to prevent mob action as tensions rose after Gueymard's death.
Twenty-two children from the Home and Day Nursery at Seventeenth and Olive streets lost their Forest Park camping picnic when two men robbed the camp. The theft left only bones and crusts, with remnants of bread and squeezed lemons. Mrs. Abrams sought help from Italians to pursue the robbers, who fled as dawn broke.
Letters from Monroe Louisiana describe harsh conditions for a group of Black workers lured to Guatemala last May to toil on railroads. Dick and the sergeant at arms bring the Cleveland setup to Chicago. Dawes Heath and others anticipate big campaign actions this week as leaders and state committeemen arrive.
In Columbus on the east side, sample nerve pills and circulars were distributed. Three year old Willie Hoff ingested the pills and fell into a comatose state with little hope for recovery. Anna Reff and Laura Knipfer also became ill after sampling the pills. authorities will analyze the pills.
Indiana Iron Works and Midland Steel Works in Muncie will resume operations with about 800 workers each. Puddle furnaces start double shift, finishing single shift. nut and bolt department remains idle for now. Plants expect limited run and uncertain duration amid weak business prospects.

Amalgamated Association calls a strike against American Tin Plate Company in Elwood Indiana. Members will receive strike allowances from the union as the dispute lasts. The Trades Council backs the action and the union vows to block replacements. Widespread rumors suggest other mill workers nationwide may join a general strike.
Hugh G. Wright of Moundsville, a Baltimore and Ohio brakeman, was knocked down and run over while coupling cars in Grafton today and died that night. The accident occurred during yard work and authorities began an inquiry into the incident.
Wiped out by fire in Jordan Kentucky area near the Southwestern Tennessee line. Early today the blaze destroyed every business house and left the town nearly empty. Cause and amount of insurance are unknown.
In Cleveland today heat rose to 93 by afternoon and stayed 88 at seven. Three militiamen suffered prostrations during the National Guard dress parade. Robert Fitzgerald, 36, of 26 Wales Street, died. Frank Bragna, of Broadway, unconscious and likely to die, and Wal Kaiser, of Champlain Street, unconscious but expected to recover, were also affected. Fifty militiamen collapsed during the event. all are expected to recover.

Pittsburg, Pa., Aug 9. Thomas Edwards, a city employee, died at South Side Hospital at 1 oclock this morning after suffering extreme agony from a sun related incident. A rainstorm broke the heat wave that plagued the city, easing the dangerous conditions.
