The Neapolitan assassin Michele Angino Golli, acting as Rinaldi, fatally wounded Senor Canovas del Castillo at Santa Agueda baths in Madrid. The premier died within two hours as the Queen Regent and government leaders pledged support, while the assassin was arrested and faces trial at Vergara. The attack sparked widespread mourning and international diplomatic sympathy.
A Madrid dispatch says the killer claimed no accomplices and no political aim, while a special Paris benefit performance heard Torrida Marmol, a Spanish anarchist ex-prisoner, urge killing Canovas del Castillo. Authorities reportedly plan to arrest Marmol.

A country school at Stumptown in Gilmore County hosts twenty scholars, sixteen named Stump. The other four share mothers whose maiden names were also Stump, highlighting an unusual family coincidence in the rural district.
A Seattle report states a whisky smuggling ring has formed with headquarters in San Francisco and a Seattle branch. Henry Laub of Louisville was invited to join but his firm declined. The plan allegedly involved chartering a steamer to ship provisions and smuggled liquor.

In Hodgenville Kentucky August 8 reports say recent gold discoveries in Hardin County mountains create intense excitement as J G Terry who owns a half interest in the most prosperous claim, previously a Cincinnati businessman and now a Hardin County merchant, works his claim with full force and prospectors in LaRue County cross the boundary to search for ore. The ore showing at sixteen feet reportedly runs up to sixty dollars per ton with expenses ...
The claim owner Mr Terry refuses to sell despite offers from prospectors across the country. The field extends several miles with new discoveries. Sheriff Mart Williams reports ore valued up to 58 dollars per ton on his claim. Terry expects deeper, richer veins just a few feet down, surpassing his own expectations.
Catherine Weaver of South Parkersburg is among contestants over a Philadelphia estate valued at 248 million dollars. The ground was leased by pioneer Baker for 99 years, a lease now said to have expired. Weaver’s interest reportedly stands at 10 million, and she lives with her son in law J W Davis as heirs are spread nationwide.
Barbourville Ky Aug 8 Joseph McKinley an ex convict from Tennessee who tried to kill defendant Dugan in the jail last night was stopped by Deputy Jailer Matthew Mitchell. He had used a boy from the Colson family to locate Dugan before the attack. Guards will be increased and defense lawyers ask for further protection tomorrow amid suspicion the two women accompanying Congressman Colson were McKinley in disguise.
In Dayton Ohio Morris Eppler aged eight shot and killed Rudolph Freikel five in the morning while they played with a revolver found by another boy named Stone. Eppler hid the weapon and returned to bed. Freikel died soon after. Stone later told the tale. Eppler is in police custody.
The body of Dr Arthur S Kennedy a 55 year old retired eye ear and throat specialist from Auburn New York was found four miles north of the city. He had left home at about 5 am to hunt and died likely from accidental gun discharge that struck above the knee causing fatal bleeding. A handkerchief stuck to the wound was found. He was known in turf circles as a fast horse owner.
Marion Ohio August 8 Jack Stemm a skilled wheelman rode ten miles yesterday for a dollar and earned a header that could cost his life as the wheel struck a stone and his head hit another resulting in serious injury and peril to life.
Crowds from miles around gather in Urbana Ohio for the camp meeting as evangelist Rev J Wilbur Chapman delivers three sermons. The 3000 seat auditorium is filled at each service with music led by P P Billham and the Kirby family of Covington Kentucky. Chapman stays through Saturday with twice daily preaching.
In Lorain Ohio on August 8 police clashed with saloon keepers at Oak Point as they attempted to distribute beer in a township that had proclaimed total abstinence. Karl Shuster was arrested for distributing liquor and Ashhenbach and Wilmot for resisting officers. Shuster fined $50 plus costs, others $26.
In McKee Kentucky on Saturday John Reece fatally stabbed George Garrett and seriously cut Noble Garrett after a dispute over damaged geese. The Garretts were neighbors of Reece, sons of William Garrett. Reece was arrested and faced possible lynching due to the violence.
Columbus Ohio August 8 The advance guard of Populists has not yet struck a town and no radicals are registered at hotels or boarding houses prepared for delegates. The scene shows little sign of the expected silverite influx and the convention’s early mood remains unsettled as delegates are anticipated.
In Chicago on August 8 a gasoline explosion severely burned Peter Vieth, his wife, and their son. Mrs Vieth, using gasoline to clean a bedstead, ignited when her husband lit a cigar. The mother, running with the child, was scorched, and Mrs Solomon the landlady helped extinguish the flames. All are expected to recover.
Springfield Ohio August 8 Governor Bushnell, though not fully well, is much improved and expects to be at his desk in Columbus Monday morning if no setback occurs. He took a ride in the park and the neighboring countryside this afternoon and enjoyed it.
In M'Kee Kentucky on August 8 six individuals were arrested for selling blackberry wine and remain jailed awaiting trial for violating local option laws. The county judge vows to prohibit substitutes for whisky.
Columbus Aug 8 The Hibernian Savings Building and Loan Association committee reports a shortage in Secretary Thomas O'Hares accounts estimated well over $10 000. Mrs O Hares agreement to surrender property valued about $5 000 is noted as part of the settlement while over $380 000 passed through O Hares hands highlighting concealment efforts.
William B Feltz failed to leap from Pike's Peak as clouds and a light snow began falling. He ascended with his large aero planes and, after two hours of adjusting the wings, postponed the daring jump. He will stay atop until conditions improve and then sail down to Colorado Springs twelve miles away. Crowds watched from below with field glasses and telescopes in demand.
The body of a four weeks old infant was discovered on the river bank in front of Maysville Kentucky yesterday afternoon. The head and one arm were missing and investigators believe the infant was thrown from a shanty boat into the river.
Aug 8 M'Kee Kentucky a Ku Klux band attacked seven families near Horse Lick Creek stripping, tying to trees, and whipping residents with switches. George Abrams and his wife were among the victims. Abrams’ wife is fatally injured and invalid for months.
In Lexington Kentucky Miss Lelia Acres, lone at home, faced a man who demanded money. She armed herself with a revolver, aimed at his head, and fired as he fled. No injuries reported.
