Politicians depart Cedar Point as B. F. Wirt F. P. Reigle and A. G. Comings unite to deny Speaker Thompson a first ballot win. The trio plans a Northern and Central campaign to pool delegations and defeat Thompson, who vows to prevail with existing support.
A Italian steamship Sirio with about 800 aboard struck Bajos Hormigas near Cape Palos and sank after 5 p.m. Many were drowned, including a bishop. hundreds were rescued by fishermen and trawlers. Survivors lack money, food, and clothing as relief moves begin.
Aug 6 St Petersburg reports show the general strike barely spreads beyond the city. Railroad workers hesitate to set a nationwide tie up while leaders debate action. The Council of Workmen Deputies contemplates drastic measures as violence flares and police reports grow.
A large number of London pulpits were occupied today by ten American preachers here for the holiday season. Included were Dr. Hamlin of Washington Dr. Tupper of New York and Dr. Hoyt of Philadelphia.
Telegraph links to Sevastopol broken for two days. Governor General Kaulbars delayed returning from Sevastopol amid midnight signals between the commandant's residence and a torpedo boat. Paris August 5. A duel is likely tomorrow afternoon between General Andre former Minister of War and General Negrier over statements in Andre memoirs which Negrier says are false. The principals have named their seconds and final arrangements remain to be set.
John Carle, a homeless man described as crazed, stabbed traveling salesman William C. Pearson in West Twenty third Street. Carle stole from the victim, claimed he had eaten nothing since Friday, and said he planned to kill the first man who passed. He was captured by a police officer and sent to Bellevue for mental examination.
Daniel Mahon 34 of Sloo and Harriet streets was fatally stabbed by Richard Carr 48 of 1202 West Front street after a card game dispute over drinks. Carr claimed self defense, Mahon begged for life, and doctors described an eight inch chest wound with the knife penetrant and lungs exposed. Carr was arrested on a cutting to kill charge while Mahon was taken to City Hospital where recovery was deemed unlikely.
Lexington Aug 5 Findley E Fogg West Liberty member of the primary committee says Lewis McQuown is misrepresenting the cost of the Democratic primary He notes no meeting has occurred and that many election officers will serve free or for a nominal day rate He foresees costs far below 45000 and outlines an anti administration slate for state offices
In Chadwick Missouri on August 5 Charles Freeman a merchant and Robert Keene 18 fought a duel with revolvers after a suit Freeman filed alleging insult to his daughter. Freeman was shot in the heart and forehead Keene three times including a heart shot both men died at the scene witnessed by townspeople.
A northbound Cleveland Akron & Columbus line accommodation train was side-swiped by a southbound train at Silver Lake Akron five miles north. One coach tipped on its side trapping about fifty passengers but nine were cut and bruised. All were rescued after windows were broken. The crash was blamed on disregard of orders by the southbound engineer.
American Ambassador Thompson reports from consuls and consular agents nationwide that there is no alarm for Americans or foreigners. Rail center labor unrest and a peaceful Mexican Central railway strike are described, with no anti American movement planned by workers. Circulars to the British colony are deemed pranks.
Scituate Mass Aug 5 Mrs Thomas W Lawson wife of the Boston financier died at Dreamwold her summer home after months of heart disease. Beside her at the end were her husband and all but one of their children including son Arnold who arrived home soon after. Before marriage she was Miss Goodwillie of Cambridge.
Anton Debo 24 a barber of 1582 Central avenue lies at City Hospital in critical condition after a back stab wound from a fight at Sixth and George Streets in which two men Frank Murphy and Jacob Lehman are held at Central Station on suspicion. Debo says he and the others argued and he was stabbed. physicians fear for his life.
At Beattyville Lee County two Breathitt County men John Smith and John Abner face trial for the alleged assassination of James B. Marcum during Breathitt feudal troubles three years ago. The star witness Asbury Spicer, who survived an attempted assassination last week, testified he aided in the Cox killing plot and witnessed Smith and Abner shoot Dr. B N Cox.
Owensboro Kentucky August 5 Following a police raid on a saloon at an early hour to break up a suspected poker game Scott McCormick died of heart failure. Excitement at the raid preceded his collapse and the coroner's inquest attributed death to heart trouble induced by the raid.
