The engagement of Lady Randolph Churchill to Lieutenant G. F. M. Cornwallis West is announced with a wedding expected in October. Churchill, once Miss Jenny Jerome of New York, is linked to Sir Winston Churchill’s family through her son Winston.
The Dolphin delivered a report to the Navy Department on the New York ferry collision in New York harbor. A board convened aboard the Dolphin blamed the ferry boat Captain for inefficient lookout and vacillation. Dolphin damage is light and repairs cost about 1200 dollars.
Special Dispatch to Commercial Tribune from Columbus Ohio August 3 1880 Al Jennings a train robber and University of Virginia graduate and Richard Price an habitual offender from Pickaway County were discovered this afternoon by Deputy Warden Dawson sawing through five iron bars in the transfer department window. William Moore who was released recently on a commuted sentence acted in the plot.
Christ. Wold, a 30 year old farmer near Poskin Lake in Cumberland County W is said to have committed suicide by dynamite. He placed dynamite in the ground laid his head over it and touched off the fuse saying Here I go and the Lord go with me His head and one arm were torn away He leaves a widow and family who cannot explain the deed.
The French dispatch transport Manche, built largely of wood, struck an iceberg off Labrador and had her bows stove in. She will enter dock for repairs expected to take about four weeks, with no danger of sinking due to her wooden construction.
Dr W H Milburn the blind chaplain of the United States Senate was stricken by a gun stroke and fell unconscious during a lecture at the Nebraska Epworth Assembly in Lincoln Park. He was revived and is improving under medical care. Doctors expect near full recovery.
In Peru Indiana this morning a Wabash double-header fast freight collided with an extra fast freight at Cedar on the Detroit Division. Four engines and many cars were wrecked. Fireman J E Replogle of Peru was killed and Engineer David Bailey injured. Other crew members suffered minor injuries. Cause of the conflicting orders is undetermined.
John Kelly known as Smiling John Kelly, a Tammany leader and noted turfman who owned and raced horses, died at age 55 in New York. He was said to be Richard Croker’s closest friend and had broad ties to horse racing circles.
Washington reports that either General Wheeler or General Lawton will command the fall fighting campaign in the Philippines, with Otis handling civil affairs. Root studies his duties, and Miles may be restored to actual army command. Root estimates 40,000 troops may be needed, with 50,000 or 60,000 argued by officers.
Margaret Snyder of St Marys sues to recover her baby from Laura A. and Jacob Smith who have cared for the child since birth ten months ago. The defendants say the mother gave the child to them to raise. The case centers in court as adoption petitions by the Smiths and Koenig are filed.
One hundred quarts of nitroglycerin exploded in a derrick at the Elk Ran oil field this afternoon. Thomas Milligan of this city, who was placing charges in the well, was killed. It is believed lightning caused the blast. Milligan belonged to the torpedo company of Milligan and French and was well known. He leaves a widow visiting in Olean New York.
In Newark Ohio on August 3 Dale five and Wayne three sons of Daniel Dowdy the glassblower drowned while playing along the swollen north fork of the Licking River near their home. The older boy was recovered after a long search in which hundreds of people helped.
Governor Theodore Roosevelt spoke at Ocean Grove on Practical Politics and Decent Politics before about 10 000 attendees. He warned that politicians debauch public conscience and urged backing the President to establish a just government in the Philippines.
The steamer Charles Nelson reached San Francisco from St Michaels via Dutch Harbor after thirty one and a half days at sea. It carried 111 passengers with an estimated wealth of about 150000. A detachment of Third U S Army artillery arrived on board. Paul C Potter of this city was among the passengers and described limited knowledge of Cape Nome discoveries. He noted reports and confusion about the gold fields.
Delegates at the jobbing confectioners convention in Buffalo adopt a resolution urging the government to substitute aluminum for copper in penny material. They argue copper cents used in the candy business are disease carriers.
A French tuberculosis treatment described by Dr Mendel and relayed by U S Commercial Agent Atwood in Roubaix uses daily bronchial injections of eucalyptus thyme and cinnamon in olive oil. In sixteen cases treated within one to two weeks cough and fever subsided and sleep appetite and strength returned.
In Plattsburg New York on August 3 1901 Mrs McKinley showed rapid health gains with two drives under the reins of the President. A 70 year old farmer Dr A D Richardson walked fifteen miles to greet the President and shake his hand. Deer damage crops as hunting season nears Adirondacks area holds rich ground for sport.
At the Episcopal council in Birmingham on August 3, Bishop H. M. Turner leads a resolution urging the General Conference to petition Congress for 100 million dollars to finance deportation of African Americans to a new nation. The meeting condemns racial violence and warns against unlawful acts by both blacks and whites.
The United States cruiser Marblehead reached Callao today from Coquimbo, Chile, en route to Mare Island, after a voyage north from Lima, Peru via Galveston.
Addie S. Stumpf of Cleveland, owning Toledo property, seeks to halt a $3,000 junket to Syracuse for the League of American Municipalities meeting. CityOfficials and Mayor Jones named as defendants in injunction suit. Judge Pratt granted a temporary injunction. perpetual injunction asked.
In Ross County near Bourneville the site of a prehistoric village yielded a large bone tool collection. Prof. W C Mills reports that trash heaps contained numerous human bones from children, suggesting they were discarded with refuse rather than ceremonially buried like adults.
Sabina Ohio August 3 The Ohio Methodist Camp Meeting opened with an immense crowd and good weather. President Dr Campbell was detained so Dr Bailey of Jeffersonville led the opening exercises. Sabbath schools were represented and the day featured instructive and entertaining programs. The Ohio Conference also begins sessions Friday morning with evangelistic services by Major Cole from Adrian Michigan in the afternoon and evening.
Pittsburg announces a strong union drive within the next week to recruit West Virginia coal miners. The plan includes buying stores to supply former members and their families with food if they are discharged for joining the union.
Secretary of State Kinney removed J. B. De Shong Democratic Deputy Supervisor of Elections of Morrow County and named A. B. Young in his place. Kinney said De Shong’s claimed county committee endorsement was false. Republicans Charles M. Williams and John Duff were appointed Election Deputies in Warren and Ottawa counties.
The Columbus Street Railway Company issued the first quarterly profit sharing dividend to employees under the new rule. Employees receive 1 percent per quarter based on wages earned, averaging as if they owned $600 worth of stock.

Nearly a thousand Seventh Day Adventists from across Ohio gathered at Randolph Park near Akron to begin a ten days’ meeting tonight. R. B. Kennedy of Beclersburg is president, H. H. Burkholder of Belleville is vice president, and E. R. Merriam of Mt. Vernon is secretary.
Berlin reports a dispatch from Apia Samoa dated July 17 confirms Luther W. Osborn as acting Chief Justice at Apia. The appointment is said to follow the proposal of Dr Solf, president of the Municipal Council.
A large blaze in Grodno, near Vilna, sweeps away a temporary military hospital and numerous public and private structures in the western part of the town. The event is reported from St. Petersburg dated August 3.
The captain of the British steamer Glooscap reporting from Philadelphia says on April 2 near Cape Melville Balabac Island Philippines the lighthouse keeper was unable to light the lamp for lack of oil. The Glooscap supplied oil and notified the British Consul at Batavia. He adds that island natives had been killed by Spaniards.
Three masked men burst into the home of Mrs Eli Parkinson near Independence and bound her and her daughter. They stole 12000 in United States bonds 750 in cash and valuable jewelry and silver ware before fleeing. No clues to the thieves were found and the incident was not discovered until late morning.
In Lawrenceburg Kentucky a prominent locally well known family faces danger as a man named George Harris is arrested after a reported assault on Mrs Louis McBrayer. Mrs McBrayer refuses to identify him and authorities plan to take him to her for confirmation amid fears of lynching in the town.
Secretary of the Interior Hitchcock will accompany the President to Lake Champlain around August 13 for a weeklong stay. He will depart soon for Marion Massachusetts to see his daughter, then spend a brief period in New Hampshire before continuing to the lake region.

In Ghent Kentucky the pilot of the steamer City of Cincinnati found a body in the river. A traveling man identified the deceased as Chris Feuchter proprietor of a German newspaper in Ironton Ohio. No marks of violence were seen and officials suspect suicide. the body washed ashore and was buried on the river bank.
Bloodhounds and a posse scour Kentucky countryside to capture a gang of dynamiters after the Barton and Clubb drug store in Bethlehem was robbed and blown to atoms. An attempt to blow up another store failed as the suspects fled.
